Anyone else interested in an 18 mile/week challenge?
I will be adding weights and other activities for variety and cross-training this month, and so I have less time allotment for walking. Also wondering if it might encourage the newer walkers, or those afflicted with blisters, etc.
Any takers? |

Maybe we need a 18 mile challenge for fall and winter, and 25 for spring and summer. That would be great. I know I won't be able to walk as much once the weather gets bad, but I would still love to work for a goal and 18 "indoor" miles will be more reasonable to reach. I'm going to try for one more 25 mile week because the weather is still good this week, BUT.... next week I am already hearing that word...... "snow". It sure is pretty, but a lot harder to walk in. In fact, I ordered some "cleats" that you slip on your shoes, boots, whatever, and see if I can get a workout walking on the snowy roads. I'll let you know how they work. (I ordered them from QVC) It would be great to get some traction for a good walk plus seeing the beautiful scenary of the snowy countryside. |

Hi Vicki,
The goal is to walk 18 miles each week, regardless of how long it takes you.
I missed yesterday so I'm going to have to hustle to get all 18 in by Sat night.
Karen -- have you considered cross country skiing? Your pedometer should still register your strides. You'll go further (the skis do slide) but the pedometer will still measure as if you're walking. It's great for strengthening the muscles around and above the knees. Also snow-shoeing? |

Belinda, I have thought about getting back into x-country skiing but never thought about using a pedometer. What a great idea! I haven't skied in years but would love to be able to get outside and get some exercise and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. Guess I better go out and buy a new pair of ski's. |

Another fun activity is tobogganing. Sounds like pure fun (and it is), but walking uphill in snow is a real workout. Unlike the gym, there's a tremendous payoff in the ride. I am buying a new pair of skipants chiefly for tobogganing purposes.
I recommend the Crazy Carpet round disc kind of slide that you can get at most supermarkets around Christmas for a few bucks. It has a tendency to spin, which can mean that you're flying down a hill backwards with no idea what's in your path (talk about getting your heart beat up!), but it's also easier to stop if the hill is too steep. Just lean to the side and out you topple. And snow is soft to fall in. Just steer clear of moguls. : ) |

Okay, so I'm a little late on the check-in. ; )
I managed 18 miles this past week. How about you? |

I think I am ready to go for that goal, is it just for walkers or biking too? |

Well, in this section, it's just for walkers. But you could always start one in Cycling. : ) |
