Okay, ladies and I am sure some men...I need your help. I have a race coming up the week after next and then another race in September that will not be wetsuit legal. I have debated this fact before but have now decided to go HARDCORE!!! The race the week after next will be hot so for the first time I will be going topless and that means it is time to shave the body. Any suggestions as to technique or product? Nair, Wax, or just a good ole fashion razor??? =) This should be fun.

Good for you Jim!!

My advice - Waxing is WAY too painful!

Use a razor with plenty of water, and load up on the shave gel so you wont get any razor burn.

I second Talia's razor--lots of shave cream---it's a big commitment!

I have had to shave for injuries and tape before, and I found that a sharp razor works best. You may want two of them. Also, you will itch like crazy, so you may want to find out how to help avoid that part.

Let me know how it goes.

JC2...keep shaving...that's how to avoid itching...that's why it's a big commitment...

IMHO waxing is ok for small stuff but not the whole body...especially if you've been known to be accused of wearing a sweater when your shirt is off...

hee hee hee hee!!

Okay Nicole...that is just wrong and gross. haha

Fortunately I do not have to worry about that. Maybe I will test a section and see how that goes and gauge the itch factor.

It is time to take the plunge!!! (he said nervously)

I started the process this morning to see if I REALLY want to do this. Started with a section on the upper thigh just above the biker tan line. MY GOODNESS how in the world do you ladies do this???!!! I think this may take me 2 days and 8 hours and several razors. haha Luckily I have a wide open, free weekend so going to be like Nike and Just Do It.

Worried about the itching factor that JC2 mentioned and the time commitment but what the hey...why not.

Maybe I should do a before and after photo but I don't want anyone to lose their lunch so I will refrain. HAHAHA

My suggestion is to use a Venus and some women's shaving cream. Andrew likes the melon-scented Skintimate or something like that. It's very manly. :)

See...with that one little fruity reference Joy has managed to suck the excitement right out of this massive endeavor.

I think I will take roids to grow more hair. haha =)

Actually, I did just come from getting the mop cut. I should have saved the clippings and glued them onto my back. HAHAHAHA

I am sure Andrew will love the fact that you shared his secrets about the melon scented whatever....

Hey Jim - perhaps you could petition Chris to add shaving as an event that you can log.

2 days and 8 hours? C'mon man, I think you can get it done in 2 days 3 hours. FOCUS. Work on your storke! Nice long stokes. "Without the nicks and cuts of a blade..."

Let me know how it goes. Most importantly, if it actually makes you faster.

Update for JC2...one underarm done this morning. Didn't have time for both. HAHA

That means if I am in an accident and the paramedics start working on me, they will think I am a FREAK!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Feel faster??? I think with my procrastination nature I am going to feel like a prickly pear!!! =)

Okay, I REALLY need this whole experience to become a reality show. Can someone hire a camera crew to follow me around???

And the story goes...last night, after class, I stopped by the local Target to pick up "supplies". I needed a few other things so picked them up and then headed for the shaving section.

Entering the aisle I was aghast at the many different items available for hair removal. The first thing to catch my eye was the Nair for men roll on. Hmmmmmmm interesting. I pick it up and start to read. All sounds good...easy application...easy directions...looks promising...wait...what is this here in fine print..."if experience stinging pain, blistering, or discomfort, discontinue use". Not for me.

I move down a little further and notice the home waxing kits. Eyeballing them I start to sweat and images of Deuce Bigolo Male Gigolo flash through my head. Keep moving down the aisle.

The next "product" is Joy's suggestion of Venus and Skintimate. "Pretty" pastel colors. =/ I look at the Venus...I look at the Skintimate...I look at the Venus...I look at the Skintimate...I look to the left...I look to the right to make sure no one is around (apparently PUP has a sister) I look at the Venus...I look at the Skintimate. Can't do it so move on.

Next product...man stuff!!!! Looks good...dark colors...cheaper. I decide to go with the Mach 3 Turbo, Super Charged, Nitro Injected, 7 Blade, Stealth, Bio-Identification Activated, Laser Guided, Razor and Barbasol shaving cream. (Gorilla Grunt Grunt Grunt)

Weapon of choice chosen I was told that you are supposed to moisturize those power packing pistons so I grab a few other items and realize I need some more ultra masculine stuff so the check out girl doesn't look at me weird. Heading to the DVD section I pick up Mad Max, Heavy Metal Jacket, and Gladiator.

SET!!!

Okay...now to help settle a dilemma I am having, I have a question and I need input because I am confused. The earlier comment about the underarm was a joke but I have been informed that it is not Tri Etiquette to shave your underarms. (even though Norman Stadler does it) You can shave anything and everything else JUST NOT THE PITS!!! So, my question is...should I rebel and go against the tri-social norm or be like supposedly all the others and keep the pit tufts??? Your help is greatly appreciated. =) Please respond soon and often because this weekend...I do battle!!! =) HAHAHAHAHA

So is the question , " Go with the norm, or be like Norm?"

Hmmmmm - difficult decision, I would at least trim, but not shave. I guess this is the non-commital, betweener answer.

Your story of going to the store reminds me of being a 20 something and not being able to go to the store to "just" purchase protection. Having to by eggs, bread, gatorade, etc....

You should have picked out Tri related items: Powerbars, Gu's, Cliff Bars, the latest edition of Triathlete magazine, Bicycing, Runners World as well instead of the DVD's.

I would have to wonder about a man shaving all while watching the quite hairy Russell Crowe in Gladiator ;o)

Best of luck - and good no go on the Nair.

JC#1 only you could make this shaving thing such an ordeal!! In the proverbial words of Nike...Just Do It!!! As a woman though, I think I'm gonna have to suggest you not shave the pits....that's just a whole new level of commitment...and weird. However, I'm gonna give you a thumbs down on shaving cream choice...the reason that Joy's man uses the gel has nothing to do with his masculinity...it has to do with moisturizing...something you won't be getting from the barbasol...you're a novice shaver so you'll learn...in just a matter of time your shopping at Target will consist of pastel colored shaving cream, pink razors and the purchase of Sleepless in Seatle! ;) Happy shaving, and remember to log that workout!

NO WE DON'T!!!!

Dang, JC2 I should have called you because the suggestion about Power Bars, Tri mags, etc would have eased the anxiety. Yes, I am such a novice but learning...the hard way.

Okay...no pits and NO, I did not go with the Barbasol it was just a joke. =P

ROFLMBO ROFLMBO ROFLMBO ROFLMBO I JUST found this...no lie!!!

More research...

"I decided that I was going to shave my arms, legs and chest before my triathlon. I have no idea why I decided this, but it seemed like a good plan at the time. Since I have been riding my bike for a couple of months now my legs were already shaved, these would just need a quick going over.

I started the process with clippers on my chest. Halfway through the process I realized that this shaving plan was probably not the brightest idea I have ever had in my life. After I got the chest trimmed and feeling nice and raw, I decided that shaving my chest was not dumb enough and I started to trim my armpit hair (this is something not to attempt the night before a race). Now my chest and armpits were nice and raw, I started on my arms. The left arm is a piece of cake, the right arm was a different story. I had about two rolls of toilet paper on my arms and chest before I was done. So instead of sitting around watching highlights from last year’s Ironman event, I spent the night applying aftershave to my extremities."

You crack me up Jim. My wife & father-in-law are road cyclists & have often told me the reason why cyclists shave their legs. Since I started training for tri's I have tried to convince my wife to give me massages afterwards. I keep getting the same response "it's too hard when you've got such hairy legs. Why don't you shave you're legs". Now besides my back & shoulders I'm hairy all over. To be quite honest I wouldn't know where to stop & imagine I'd look pretty damn silly at the pool in speedo's if I stopped just above the tan line of my tri shorts. I've got continuous growth from my ankles to the top of my chest. I'm also concerned it would become itchy. I rarely shave (my face) on weekends as I hate shaving for work M-F. Adding my legs or other areas would seem like just another task to take care of.

Having said that, I may change my mind.

Let us know how you go. I think before & after shots would be a good laugh.

Good luck

Dan

I'm with you Dan - I hate shaving M-F, if I am not seeing clients, I hide in the back room all day and stay unshaved. It is a huge commitment.

Dan, I am not sure where you live (QL?), but are you the one they have been taking pictures of with claims that it is Sasquash, Big Foot, or the Yeti?

I couldn't help thinking of it as I read your post... :oD

LOL JC2. No, I'm not quite that hairy. Also "QL" is short for QLD which is short for Queensland (the best state is Australia :-)).
