I've heard of the Vo2 max test and it is offered at my school, but I've never heard of lactate threshold. What is the test to determine lactate threshold and what is the application? I'm also interested if anyone has had these tests an if they were able to apply their test results to their training.

Well, prepare yourself for a butt kicking. First let me say that I have never had a VO2 or LT test. But what I do know is that it consists of getting on a treadmill, stationary bike and ""PUT OUT"". It will help with your training if you complete it and then complete it again in 3 to 6 months. If your training properly and consistently then you should be able to see the change.

I train with a more general LT equation, whereby you subtract your age from 180 and add 1-5 BPM for your fitness level. I know this sounds basic, but it has been proven time and again by professional athletes as well as everyday Joes like me. You can read up more on this at www.markallenonline.com

i know this is a late reply, hopefully its still useful...Ive done a Vo2 max test in an exercise physiology class. its pretty miserable. actually, my hrm (polar 410) does a simple little test, you lie there doing nothing, it measures your hr variability, you put in your max hr and it gives you an estimate of your Vo2 max. It turns out the estimate from my hrm was very close to the actual test (which again, was pretty miserable). The useful thing about it is that once you know your Vo2 max your hrm can estimate your calorie burn much more accurately. I think lactate threshold may be more useful in terms of training ranges. i think its more important for training. Vo2 max just tells you your max (like your max hr) but not how your hr gets there (although it may tell you something about your potential), some people's LT is much higher (in hr) than others and thats what really determines your hr training ranges.

Another late reply. VO2max is an extremely TAXING test to have done (actually both tests are), since you go all out 'til ya can't go no more, like others have said. I've done this several times over a few years, even once on the bike, where i was drooling everywhere and the bike started rocking and moving forward on the trainer--fun times. You can use these results to estimate training ranges, like where you want your long distance heart rate to be, where to keep HR during track workouts, and where to keep it during anaerobic threshold runs. LT determines at exactly what heart rate you start building up lactic acid faster than you can re-use it. A lot of people use anaerobic threshold (that you get in a VO2max test) in place of lactate threshold, but this isn't really correct. They may be at similar HRs, but they don't mean the same thing. Lance gets his lactate measured often, and he can work at an extrememly high level of lactate in his blood, which could be part of his superhumanness. The test involves a similar one to the VO2max test, but with finger prickings. I haven't had it done, but would probably pay a couple hundred bucks for it... that is, if I couldn't find a study at a local university that is looking for athletes who will go through it...(we were planning one when i was in grad school, but it never happened :( hope this helps!
