I did my first time trial of the year last night so it seemed like a good idea to get a Speed Freaks thread going for 2008.
It was not my best time ever (or even close!) but it's the begining of the season for me so this is about setting a baseline.
1 mile (running) time trial at the track.
Overall: 7:44
lap 1 - 1:57
2 - 3:55
3 - 5:52
4 - 7:44
My coach taped the TT, watching the video was shocking as I do not run anything like I think I do! |

Thanks Vickie!
With my club we do TT's once a month so I'll see how much the training pays off in about four weeks. |

Alison and company....
The only TT's I am breaking are those of getting from car to building and building to car in this brutally cold weather. Looking forward to a thaw. Weekly TT bike challenges coming this spring...........

Alison...way to get the season going!!
Here's my less than speedy entry!!
Race: Mud in Your Eye XC series race #1 (5K)
Weather: Cold low 30's (balmy by Greg's stnadards though) windy and raining--pretty perfect for XC
Course: Over Hill (there is really only one in VAB and it's an old trash dump), over dales, through the mud and around in circles!!
Time 26:25
mile 1: 8:55
Mile 2: 8:23
mile 3: 8:25
0.1: :42
Good benchmark for the beginning of the year...and lots of improvement to be made!! :)

Great to see the new thread for the new year!
In the deep freeze up here in New England, 20f. Greg, I imagine you have that beat though! I don't have any races scheduled untill a 5 miler in March. I did get my VO2 tested and trainig zones established. Kind of fits this thread so I'll post my results.
Age 42/Male
VO2 max 54.8 ml/kg/min @ 180 beats per minute(BPM)
Anaerobic/Lactate Threshold 174 BPM
power to weight ratio 2.9 (80.3kg/239watts{VO2 max wattage})
Zone 1 113/132 BPM
Zone 2 132/148
Zone 3 148/165
Zone 4 165/180
Zone 5 180+ 250 watts+
I have been performing bicycle base training on my new Kinetic stationary trainer I bought in December and wanted bench marks for my training. The above zones apply to bike only but the tester said adding 5% would work for running.
They also gave me an interesting graph that shows fat burn(Kcal/min) versus heart rate. I have a peak of 13 Kcal/ min at 153 BPM. Low zone 3, Tempo/race pace. I plan on base training untill April first and then start tempo and speed work!
All cool information and now I'm just trying to get in the miles/laps for the upcoming race season!!

Right now I am with Todd - Just trying to build LSD moiles for running and cycling, plus working on technique in the pool. No plans for speed for a while. |

Oops...sorry, I told someone I would start this again at the beginning of the year so THANKS ALLIE "THE HOOLIGAN" THOMPSON for getting it going.
Ummmmm did some quarter mile repeats at the track every Sunday but can't remember them all so will post my best time so far:
Quarter mile = 1:09
10K a couple weeks ago = 8 min pace
Half Marathon coming up on 2/3 and looking for an 8 min pace for that race also.

Hey Greg
Interesting numbers. Did you say they were calculated during rest or were you biking/running??
I had mine calculated on a bike trainer using my bike.
I'm going to re-test in april to look for changes. Now I guess all we have to do is the work!!!

Todd,
Those numbers (VO2) were calculated on a treadmill. The resting (RMR) seated in a quiet room. I'm looking at having a retest around June. Also, interested in seeing how Polar's fitness assessment compares to these numbers.

Half Marathon Report: Finishing time 1:50:41 or so...only an 8:26 pace but a new PR for me at that distance. WOOO HOOO!!! One day a week training really pays off. HAHAHA
First 5k of the year in two weeks. I have a slew of people doing this one. All at different levels so it should be fun to hang out with them afterwards. I will try to PR this one too but that maybe a stretch. I have no idea where I am at for a 5k. I figure 7:30 easy enough but would like to be sub 7 per mile which I think is pushing it. I could do 1 mile in 6:45 but that would be it. hahaha Maybe if the moon is in the right phase and the planets are alligned perfectly I can do it. We will see.
I need to do a tempo run and find out where I am at. Speedwork this Sunday so I will try to knock down that 1:09. |

numero uno...that's it...your finish time...no race novel? What is the world coming to?! :) Cograts...sounds like you had a great race...maybe try 1 per every other week training for the 5K! |

JC1 (yeah I got it right),
I agree with Nicole (fish) in that an elaboration on the race would be good, especially with a PR! By the way, my fastest race time is 8:45 on a 10K (end leg to triathlon). Way to go!

This is my first 3-mile treadmill "self-imposed" trial on treadmill after laying down some base work.
Base work: Run starting in zone 2 and progressing to AT and backing down to zone 2 resulting in about 1/2 workout in zone 2 and 1/2 workout in zone 3. Vary in lenth from 3 to 7 miles.
Trial: 3 miles on treadmill - 2 miles in zone 3 and last mile in zone 4 (had to back down to zone three as I was breaking down after about 6 minutes in zone 4). Pace: 7:50 min/mile.
Need a few more LSD runs.

Hey guys! I have an "endurance freak" post to make. I slept a total of about 15 hours the other day. I can't be quite sure of the exact number since I was in and out of slumber frequently throughout an afternoon before I went to bed finally, but I'm sure it made it to at least 15. I was a little sleep deprived and in hibernatin mode...

Sleep easy Joy, you have another 2-3 months to hibernate. I'll wake you when it's time to wake up. He he..maybe I can put in a few hundred miles by then.

Hey Joy,
Good job on the sleep thing! (envy) I'll never be able to compete unless it's sleep deprivation that is. ;) Vickie |
