I just finished Dean Karnezes book about his ultramarathon running - crazy! but it got me thinking about why i run. Why do I run?
Many reasons - I run because I can, I run for those who can't. I run because it increases my patience and keeps me present and humble. I run because it increses my appreciation for what my body/mind/spirit/heart can accomplish, an appreciation for my strength and dedication. I run because it connects me to a larger community while still allowing me to experience myself and be with myself.
So why do you run?? |

Short answer is because after my heart attack my doctor said I needed to find a way to get rid of stress and lose weight.
One of the things I like best is forgetting about the world and my problems and concentrating on the run itself. |

I run because it is more fun to think about/plan running than eating. There is a chapter in a V.I. Washawski book by Sara Paretsky that starts something like: " I have the kind of mind that makes it much easier to be discliplined about exercise than about eating" That would be so me! I also run because I can do it anywhere, because it is a good excuse to get outside and enjoy my thoughts, because saying I've run a marathon is so cool, because it allows me to be part of the running community (including our great FJ community) and because having once had cancer and knowing what a toll chemotherapy and radiation take, I want to be in the best shape possible should I have to face it again. |

I run for the fabulous feelings of freedom and satisfaction! I love seeing how much I've done. I love listing to the music I want without interruption. I love seeing things I wouldn't if I didn't run...blue herrons, deer, and so on. I love the complete 'me' time. I love the whole body/mind/soul/spirit connection that I get. I love the feeling of accomplishment when I'm done. It is the best stress relief for me in the world.
I also love to eat and running helps me maintain my weight :) Good post! I have a 10 mile run on Saturday and will remind myself of all these comments with a big ol' smile on my face! Thanks, Summer! Hope you're doing well. |

Reading everyone's posts has made me want to start running again! It's made me realize how much I've been missing it. I started running about a year ago and could barely jog for more than a minute at a time. But in July, I completed the Atlanta Peachtree Roadrace (10K) and it felt great! My goal was to finish without walking and I did it! My family and friends were shocked and amazed! Next I would like to complete a half-marathon in Feb., but I think I've been a little intimidated at the thought of training for that one. 13.1 Miles is a long way! But you all have inspired me and I'm planning to start my training the first of Oct.! And I definitely agree with Summer's comment that running keeps you humble (so true)! Thanks everybody!

I love this post. I love running. I'm not good at it, and really it's not in my blood like some people, but I just can't seem to stay away from it either. I've liked to run since Jr. High School, which was a long time ago. I don't know, it's just a part of me. I like the fact that more and more society doesn't expect you to be a fast runner or a skinner runner either, just that you love to run. Makes me feel like a dog, maybe a Irish Setter; they run because they love to. |

I run because of the way I feel when I am running. I've tried the gym memberships and using the indoor machines, but nothing comes close to running. I feel more fit when I am running than I do when engaged in any other exercise.
I run because I love the outdoors.
I run because I have run off and on since college, and enjoy it.
I run because I feel a part of a larger group of athletes who are committed to it.
I run because it helps me manage my weight.
I run because it makes me feel younger! |

I began running at the start of the running boom in 1979. My first pair of running shoes was the famous Nike waffle soled shoe invented by the track coach at Oregon. I did it to lose weight and went at that time from 192 lbs to 162lbs and ran every race length less the marathon. I was logging 50 miles per week which I kept religously in my Log book by Jim Fixx. I remember the runner's high I would achieve during the middle of the run and it felt like going into overdrive. I could run effortlessly for ever it seemed. Now at age 53 I started again, this time after a 27 year sedentary lifestyle. I long for those effortless runs to return, but at 232lbs the age and the weight pose a real challenge. A challenge that I have accepted. I am not as fast as I once was nor can I run as often, but I still like the feeling of the solitude and wind blowing through my hair. I run because I can. |

I've come back to running after a long lay off. Why? I miss the feeling of running mile after mile through the streets. |
