I'm training for IMAZ in November and have been reading about the run/walk method for the run protion. It suggests that you run for 9min fast walk for :30sec. I've done a few marathons and some 1/2 IM and have never tried this method. My best time for a marathon is 3:34 and for the 1/2 IM is 5:13 but with the IM being a totlly different ball game I've been thinking about it.
Has anyone every tried this method for an IM or a marathon and how did it work for you. They say it's a great way to keep you at a steady pace for the whole race and you don't have pace fading.

Hey Pat,
This is interesting. I think I might throw it out on my blog too and see what people say. Do you mind?
I would be curious to see what people think...
SEE YOU TOMORROW, YEAH!!

I don't have anything official but I have also heard of the idea of "walking" through aid stations. I did this at Vineman and it seemed to work well, especially since the aid stations were every 2 miles. So I would run to the station, start to walk as I took in liquids and then I would start back up at the last garbage can. Not only did I get a small break from running but I also got a lot more fluids that way.

Like Lee said and as my trainer had me do for 1/2 IM... run from aid station to aid station and walk through the drinks. I did that and them some which got me through the race under my expected time of 6:30. He's an IM'er and recommends the method highly.

Patrick--definitely walk through the aid stations, they are about every mile at an IM AND they are STOCKED (and manned by the greatest volunteers)!! Seriously, in order to comprehend all your choices (if your brain is actually working at that point) you'll need to walk...water, coke, gatorade, cookies, fruit, gels, broth, wet sponges, ice etc etc, a total smorgasbord and volunteers with trays to serve you and ask you what you want!! When I did IMFL I walked through the aid stations...in fact pretty much most race I enter I walk through the aid stations...you don't loose much time and at the end of an IM, you could be fighting a multitude of things, so taking the time to get some nutrition will be time well spent and most likely do more to positively impact your finish time than negatively. While I'm not the fast runner you are, my IM marathon was less than 20 minutes off my best marathon time--with the second half being 8 minutes different from the first. Patience, pacing and good nutrition is where it's at!! Enjoy!! |

Thanks for the advice. The more i read about it the more i like the idea. The only thing that i'm reading that is a little different from what i'm hearing is that when you start to walk you should keep your arms swinging like you are running and should be a quick walk. this way it keeps you mind/body in the running mode but gives your body a rest.
