Hello everyone, I just started running a few months ago and ALWAYS wear a baseball cap during my runs. I have lots of hair and it keeps it out of my face and the sweat out of my eyes. My husband just told me however, that it may not be the best thing because it will make my head hot. My husband doesn't run at all and I'm wondering if he knows what he's talking about or if HE is the one full of hot air!!

HI Jami,
I don't want to start a war but I wear a hat. I wear headsweat hats and visors. These hats are made of the moisture wicking material and have a sweatband type of liner around the base to absorb sweat and keep it out of my eyes on runs. The hat helps to keep you cool by reflecting some of the suns rays (if you wear a white colored hat) and helps prevent sun burn on the top-for those of us with a thinning dome!
Cotton caps will give some of the same protection but won't release perspiration back into the air nearly as quick as moisture wicking material. If you haven't discovered moisture wicking material yet, go to target and check out the C9 wear by champion. It's cheap and functional. Once you try it you'll never want to use cotton again!!
Hope this helps, Todd. |

Jami,
No offense to your husband, but he's wrong. I agree that you should be wearing a hat that has wicking material and not cotton. But even if it were cotton, you'd still be better off than not wearing anything. There was even a study done showing that people who didn't wear hats ran slower and became more fatigued than those who did, even in conditions where it wasn't sunny. I think I recall also reading that those who didn't wear a hat had a higher body temp than those who did.
Basically it comes down to what Todd said - the visor/hat blocks the sun from your face. Even psychologically it does good because you don't have the sun beating down right on your face, which makes you FEEL cooler even if you're not.
I won't run without a hat. Not only does it keep me from getting burnt to a crisp out there, but I can def vouch for just feeling better with it.
Hope that helps!

Cool, thanks for the conformation on that. I do wear a cotton hat but will be sure to check out the other material. I'm due for a new one!

The FJ (Fitness Journal) hat or visor. You can buy a black or white one and for the ladies FJ now has a white hat with a pink FJ logo. Just go to the home page and you can order from there. |

Pat's right - the FJ hat is cool. Basically there's a company called Headsweats that makes these hats with this coolmax-type material. Here's their website: http://www.headsweats.com/. It's AWESOME! Now go buy an FJ hat! |

HAHAHA - Good one Lee -
I have both the visor and the hat - My head seems to stay cooler with the hat. However, I have VERY black hair, and when the sun hits it, it gets hot like a black car on a sunny day.
Also, having some shade for your face from the sun is beneficial. The PINK is pretty cool, saw one the other day.
Good luck...

Another tip - look for hats that have a dark color under the brim. That way the sun won't reflect from that surface into your eyes as they can do with lighter colored undersides. |
