Hi, I'm new to FJ (and new to running). I've never done anything like this before (sharing about my goals). I'm a great walker and never been a runner, but have always wanted to do it. So, I aim to run 5km (~3.1miles) non-stop by the end of the year on the walking tracks near our house. The reason I'm so specific is I started on the treadmill at the gym (I'm up to about 20mins non-stop) and then tried to run in the 'real world' with my husband. I did about 5 mins (after a moderate 30min walk) and then was exhausted. I've had a look at some of the other posts and found great plan to increase my stamina and reach my goal. I guess I'd like to report my progress (some accountability!) each week. At the moment I run 2xweek in the real world and 2-3xweek on the treadmill. Thanks Kez

Kez,

If you keep at it and don't overdo, you should see progress quickly with your running. If you have any 5k races available to you, they are alot of fun and very motivating and all ages and levels participate. Look forward to reading your progress. I remember the first time I could finally run a mile around the track and was thrilled and now I just ran my 13th marathon. It can be addictive! Have fun and good luck with your training. MC

I will be looking for updates. I have been told to try and shoot for 10% time increases per week.

Good Luck. ~ JC1.5

Running on a treadmill and running in the real world is much different on a treadmill the ground moves from under u so its not so much work that is why it was much mor difficult for u to run in the real world i advise that u train more in the real world then on a treadmil if u want to reach your goal! Just a suggestion all the best

Thanks for the encouragement everyone. It really makes a difference. I've been feeling under the weather, so I've been walking instead. I think I've successfully fought it off the potential cold so I'll be back on the pavements soon. We're flying to the UK for a 3 week holiday on Sat and I'm committed to continuing my running in the 'real world' while I'm over there! I let you know how I go late next week (whenever we find an internet cafe).

Hi everyone, we're in the UK now. Yesterday we ran from Penzance towards Mousehole (pronounced muzzle) along the coast in Cornwall (very beautiful). We did 2min run, 3 min walk & all up we ran/walk for 52 mins (=22min running - how exciting!!). Today we're in Manchester at a friends house & I went by myself and ran 3min/walk 2min for 30min. I think run 4min; walk 1min is the way to go for me awt the moment. This interval type approach is really good. We're going to wales for a visit today & then back to manchester & off to yorkshire tomorrow. Running there will be very nice!! Cheers Kez

I'm not a huge runner myself, but I do run from time to time to keep things interesting and when I don't have any other facilities available, such as when I am travelling. I just bought my first pair of proper running shoes, aligned to my running style, this last weekend.

On the subject of your runing and then walking, I recently read in Mens' Health that if you walk for 1 minute after every mile (1.6Km), you could improve your marathon time by as much as 13 minutes! Counter-intuitive but they seem to think that it works.

After a busy holiday and some down time due to injury (hurt my ankle). I have some news to report.

I'm up to 5.2km on the treadmill (yay) I reached 5km about 10 days ago.

I ran 18mins in the real world on the weekend (equiv to about 2.8km) - so I'm over half way there!! I probably could have run for longer, but the physio said to take it easy in the real world until ankle fully heals.

So all I can say is *YAY* for me! My goal now is to be able to run 10km on treadmill & 5km in real world by end of the year.

Cheers Kez:)

I got to 30mins running non-stop on the bike paths near our house. My husband rode along next to me to give support (yes he is great) ... so I'm nearly there .... which is fabulous considering how sick I was a couple of weeks ago.

Well I finally got there. Today I run 31 mins non-stop outside BY MYSELF, which I reckon is about equivalent to 5km on treadmill (which I do in about 29min). So thanks for all your support. I might even enter a 5km race next year ... :)
