A note about others in relation to you on the road. A couple days ago my husband was driving down a street here on which there are a lot of runners, bikers, and walkers. It is a 3 lane road (w/turn lane in center) and has shoulders. He was behind an elderly woman driving her car who decided the shoulder was a driving lane. He stayed behind her and watched bcs a runner was running opposite traffic heading toward this lady. She didn't notice him but, thankfully, he noticed her and got down into the ditch as she barely moved to the left to finally avoid him. Thank goodness he was running against the flow of traffic to see the potential danger.

This morning on my way to the gym (still very dark out) I saw 2 pieces of reflective tape running along the 5 lane steet w/shoulders. This person was running with the traffic and would have no way of seeing someone coming up from behind. This is the second time I've seen this recently. A very good friend of my cousin also recently lost her husband, training for a marathon, as a truck took his head off with its mirror. He was running in the street with the flow of traffic.

Please be careful out there.

Well said Beverly. ALWAYS run against the flow of traffic. RoadID sells some nice beacon lights for runners who train in darkness. With fall and winter coming up I run in the dark a lot after work. I will be getting one of those for me. http://www.roadid.com

I just checked...the Firefly looks kind of interesting. I wonder if colorblind folk can see the red or green?

Gary, Bev,

All good advice. Its funny, but in the Army we take a lot of precautions. Even when we control the roads on a post and eliminating traffic, reduce speeds to 5 mph - we all wear reflective belts. Additionally, at least four people in a formation are wearing reflective vests and carrying flashlights with cones. And the lettering on the Army training shirts are reflective also. Multiple levels of reflective items so all are seen.

Overkill? No, not if it prevents someone from getting killed. I find it hard to believe that some still run or walk in limited visibility with only reflective tape on shoes and not facing traffic.

I just retired from the Army and ride to work some mornings and still wear multiple layers of refletive belts, lights, reflectors. I wear one on my ankle, one across my body and one light in front and back - And I ride on the sidewalk! In a competitin between me and a car, I will always loose.

Great website, if you run or bike in the dark, get some visibility!

Terry

I purchased a blue Firefly -- it works great! It is very light-weight and clips easily on my gym shorts.

I have a reflective vest to wear as well, but reflective vests, tape, trim aren't enough IMHO.

The light is very easy to see, and by flashing it gets attention quickly.

Ok, here's a ponder...by flashing I wonder if someone might lock onto it w/the deer in the headlight look.... Still, I'd rather be noticed! Beverly

Beverly,

I was thinking along the lines of a trench coat with no clothes---flashing...NOW that should keep the cars at bay...not sure about the dogs.. :)

Gary, Thanks for the internet site on the Firefly, etc. Great site. Their products would work great on bicycle too.

I didn't mean I was going to flash...but, words do mean things, don't they. It won't happen! :):)

Hi Everyone. I placed an order with Road ID last week. I was really impressed with their products, service and friendliness. I previously purchased Pet ID's from Pet Smart - it is an ID tag for your Pet, but I put my name and phone number on them and attached them to my shoe laces. I have to tell you, though, that the ID that Road ID sells is much better! It has more info. on it. And I bought the wrist one so it doesn't matter what shoes I wear or if I'm running or biking. They have lots of great safety products.

Hi Ann. Yeah, I got the bracelet also. Beverly is right it does add a lot to your arms with the HRM on the other wrist, but with clipless bike shoes there is no place to attach it.
