Has anyone any experience with this type of running pain/injury? (Neuromas:A neuroma is a bundle of nerve endings whose covering has become inflamed. Probably between the third and fourth toes, you feel a burning sensation, maybe more like an electric tingling or a shooting pain, possibly with some numbness. Whatever the exact sensation, it is no doubt excruciating. There is no swelling, no bumps. The pain may come on at odd times, even when you are not being particularly active.)

I have a bad case of it in my right foot and need to find a remedy quick. I know metatarsal pads help somewhat, but they are now removing the problem. Any other advice would be great. I don't have access to any form of pediatrist or foot/running doc, so I am looking for anything that will help until I can get my problem back to the US in a couple months.

Hey Kim,

I don't know if this will help, but I had what was theorized (by some professional footwear associates at Fleet Feet!) to be a neuroma, several years ago. It just happened that I had some arch supports (full-length) put in my shoes about the same time for other reasons, and it took away my pain for good. I've since switched shoes to some with better arch support, and haven't had the pain since. The metatarsal pads didn't really work for me.

Great picture, by the way! So that's your training grounds? Awesome. :)

Joy,

Were they standard arch supports? Do you remeber the brand, or a brand that is similar today? I'm limited with what is available out here, so I'd have to go online and search. If you see something online that you think would fit your description it's worth the try until I can get home. This thing kills!!

The pads don't seem to be doing the trick for me either.

The pic was from this past June, when I was training up for Ironman UK and the London Olympic Triathlon. I submitted it to Tri Magazine, but got beat out by a guy in Iraq racing simultaneously with his wife in some other Triathlon. He was active duty military, so he wasn't there by choice...he deserved it more I think. Now we have colder temps and sporadic bouts of snow mounting up to 1 or 2 feet. I'll post another soon.

Hey? Where's your pic? I'd like to see a Kona finishline photo!! You're AWESOME!!

Kim,

I remember reading about the guy who did the Tri at the same time as his wife back in the states. That was pretty cool, but I'm thinking, FREAK!!!! HAHAHA!

Kim,

I haven't had Neuromas, but have had plantar fascieitis, and now I think metatarsalgia. The extra weight and the boots I am running/walking in now are creating havoc on my feet.

I use splints at night, and this has cured my feet problems and gives me great relief now.

I don't know if you have seen them, but they are plastic half boots that keep your foot/ankle at a right angle allowing the foot to heal in a stretched position at night. The foot at night tends to curl and all the muscles and ligaments shorten (the plantar fascia and achilles tendon) and try to heal from the days hard work. In the morning when you get up something ends up tearing as it strecthes.

The Neuroma is different than that, but it is worth a shot. As I understand it, you have options, such as orthotics, bigger toe box, pad, and even cortisone or surgery. Good luck, hope it gets better.
