I entered this multi sport season with no running base and struggled.
Basically I am good for a 10k now, but longer distances are kicking my bu##. I set out on a 10 miler this last weekend, but just like my 1/2 ironman this year I hit a pain threshold that I could not tolerate at mile 8. It's the muscles and legiments around the knees. I am not winded at all, I just don't have the legs as they say.
My goal next year is to become real comfortable with 1/2 marathons as part of 1/2 Ironman competitions.
For 2009, I am hoping to build to a full ironman distance. So, a full marathon.
Questions:
Should I be shooting for a full marathon in 2008?
How should I build my base over the winer?
Should I consult a PT or some one for run technique due to the pain in the knees?
Any help is much appreciated...

Not qualified to answer your questions, but one suggestion would be to run as much as you can on soft surface trails instead of the pavement. I always try and do my long runs on the trail. I also wear a simple Ace knee brace on my weak knee that helps with support and tracking straight. I think deep water running is good too, if you can stand the boredom. |

Jim
When i did my marathon i got a PT and it helped a lot. If you want i can send you the training schedule. Your goal of a marathon in 08 should be fine. this winter should be all about long slowwwww runs. As far as your knees go lets talk next time we ride i my have a few things for you.

I agree with PK.
Long, S-L-O-W runs are better at helping your body adjust properly (metabolically and physiologically) and will eventually allow your body to run further faster.

Michelle -
What the heck is "deep water running"? I am OK with boredom, but isn't breathing an issue?? :oP
I totally agree with off road running, there is a nice 8 mile loop and they usually feel ok on it.
Pat - Yes, please share what you can next time we ride or earlier by e-mail. Oh and BTW, all my runs are slllloooooowwwww. ;o)
This year has been a big increase in training for me, I already surpassed my hours for the entire year in 2006, I am thinking that my leg muscles are pulling on my Patela (sp?) - or knee cap. I had this happen about 2 years ago, and stretching seemed to help, but this year it is a bit worse.

Jim,
For deep water running, there are flotation vests to keep you off the bottom but since my pool is not that deep I use foam dumbells to hold me up. You then just simulate running. I will do intervals so I don't have to spend that much time at it. There are foam cuffs for your feet to make it more difficult. I have read where elite runners when injured have come back just as strong with doing only water running. I think its a good way to get in an extra run workout without the pounding. MC |
