Has anyone experienced a numbness in the ball of the foot?
I noticed this after a week when I had run a bit more than usual. I mentioned to my physician who suggested it could be caused by running too much or using old running shoes without much absorption left. He advised me to stop running for 2 weeks and get new shoes. I got new shoes and 'reduced' my running and the numbness has abated slightly.
Just wondering if others have experienced this and how it resolved for them. Thanks.

Yes...shoe laces were too tight. I needed more room in the toe box so I started my laces up one hole from the bottom. Also, running shoes should be 1/2 to a whole size larger than regular shoes for foot expansion. There's a "rule of thumb" which states that you should have the width of your thumb between the end of your shoe and your toes inside. Make sure, if possible, that you go to a running store to be properly fit. Hope this helps!

I'm in the process of getting orthotics-I experience numbness when I bike and run. My runing shoes and cycling shoes fit fine. While I was at the expo for the Florida half-ironman, I met with someone from Newton sneakers and described what was going on. He looked at my feet and the way they rolled in when I squated. He said my nerves were becoming inflamed as a result of my feet rolling in and that orthotics should help (he made orthotics for 20 years so I felt he know what he was talking about). I followed up with a podiatrist who took x-rays and pointed out where I was experiencing the numbness before I even told him. I get my orthotics next week and will be breaking them in gradually. I wish I had done something about this years ago!
Best of luck! |
