Hello everyone,
I have been having problems with lower back pain when I run on cement. I've changed shoes and even gone to a running store to have them watch my gait. I train with others and no one has noted any unusually bad form. I'm not a good runner and my frustration is increasing on the back pain. I've set a goal for a 1/2 marathon in January, and I'll need all of that time to suceed. I'm in need of help. Thanks, Vickie |

Vickie,
If you are serious get the book Pain Free by Pete Egoscue and read the first three chapters then go to the back section or the one on hips.

Vickie,
Once your doctor clears any possibility of something structural you can try what I do. I have always had back problems (my achilles heal is you will). Now when I go for long runs I take ibuprofen and put an icy/hot patch over the area that gives me the most trouble. So far it has worked out great.

Go to a physiotherapist or a sports medicine doctor and see what think. Back pain can be caused by so many things (impact, muscle imbalance, poor alignment of vertebrae, old injuries, etc.) that it's best to get a professional opinion. |

I really appreciate the input. I've seen a sports med doctor and he cleared me. I use Advil and it works, and I will try the book too. I'm working on core strength, but it's slow and 6 miles last night almost made my teeth clench by this morning. Thanks to all for the help, I'll keep reading Vickie |

I'd try strengthing my core too. You may be holding yourself up with your back muscles when you run. Your abdominals should be doing the work. I'd also avoid cement. It's soooo hard on the joints. I train on dirt when I'm having aches and pains. Makes a huge difference. |
