Tonight I went for what I consider to be a longer run. 7 miles. I run this out and back route for several distances and have never had a problem. I'm about 5 miles into it and I am running past this house and a dark barking blur starts running at me. I think nothing of it as I've run past this house many times and have never been attacked. Well.... this barking blur runs at me and runs right through my legs. I felt like a running back being tackled and flying in the air momentarily. I go into a tuck and roll and get up with only a scratch. Now what do you all do to avoid this? Mind you, I live in the country and run on dirt roads with corn fields on both sides of the road and a house about every 1/2 mile or so. It's relatively common for dogs to be loose and running free. Do you carry doggy treats like the Fedex man does? Or something else? I finished my last two miles of the run rather quickly. I had a boost of energy after being tackled. Anyway, your thoughts?

In the classic words of Norm from Cheers, "It's a dog eat dog world, and I'm wearing milkbone underwear."

I have had dogs charge me on runs and on the bike. In fact, one time the group I was riding with changed our route due to a dog. I only worry about it on the bike in that the dog could get tied up in the wheels and hurt us both.

I find most of their attempts are bluffs and they don't get within stricking (biting) distance. But, if they do, I throw a swift, stiff kick at them, and so far that has worked. I don't support kicking animals, but I do not want to get bit either. I have only had to do this twice.

When running - slowing down and facing them seems to keep them away, they are more likely to attack if you seem to be fleeing.

Best of luck,
