Due to some personal issues I sold my Specialized Allez Comp road bike in 2006. I was bikeless all of 2007 and most of this year. At age 55 my fitness level began to suffer. (It happens quickly at this age BTW). I completed my HS football officiating season and did not want to digress through the winter months only to begin 2009 a human blob. I just happened to pass by my local bike shop and the calling began....."get another bike...get another bike." I did, but this time I went with a nice hybrid, a Specialized Sirrus. It rolls well with the 700x28 tires. The bike will be easier on my back and will a good bike to ride to work when I don't have to be out of town.

Maybe it is something that gets in your blood. Cycling in Arkansas can almost be a 12 month sport if you can cope with the few cold weeks. So, I am back. Back in the brotherhood of cyclists. Not a roadie anymore per se, but maybe someday down the road. Looking foward to putting some quality miles in the saddle of my new Specialized Sirrus.

Welcome back to the world of cycling. Sounds like a great bike to have some fun with as you cruise around town.

Lee, I plan on more than just cruising around town. Not all of the roadie is out of me yet. Nevertheless, I will be putting in the same number of miles per week and getting my weight back down to where it once was.

Weather continues to be rider friendly here. Today, after a day of rain yesterday the temp was near 70. Going to be out of town Friday through Sunday so I will try to get a ride in early Friday morning before I leave. Legs are feeling the previous few rides, but a good feeling. The couple of days off will be good for them.

I got the Specialized Sirrus Expert with some Ultegra SPD pedals. What a sweet bike. I will enjoy riding it. However, I can already smell another road bike in my future. Since I began riding again I was able to ride 14 out of 22 days in November (began November 8th). I am glad I got this bike however, so I can ride with my wife who has a Jamis confort bike. So I will be a two bike owner by this spring. My weight is beginning to drop and my endurance is steadily getting better. But once a roadie....hmmm...always a roadie.

I am so with you!

After my bike shop closed and the falling dollar derailed my import business I totally stepped off the bike...for almost 3 years!

In June of 07 with no road bike and a really crappy left over comfort bike from the shop I began commuting 10-15 miles a day to or from work (firefighter 24 hour shifts). it was a matter of 30 days before I got my old Kona Dr Dew from my ex and started riding a great city bike, and did close to 1300 miles commuting in 07.

However in November of 07 my wife decided my sports car was a death trap and got a new Magnum Wagon for me and well my riding again came to an abrupt end. Its just so cold in Corpus Christi during the winter...right? I did get my Carbon road bike back at this time, but didn't do more than 5-6 riders on it due to a seat post issue I just didn't get fixed ( had several bikes, but when I left the bike business left them with family and friends because I didn't want to see them anymore)

So instead of staying on and getting fit I ballooned to over 245 by January of this year. My racing weight was always 170 give or take 8 lbs depending on the season and my commitment level at the time.

So for Christmas I got a new bike for my wife with money from a computer theft (I dint really need 3 of them, so didn't replace the stolen one) and a trailer to pull my two girls around Corpus.

In January I began doing 5-8 mile rides towing the girls and enjoying the time spent with my wife. Its now February and I am up to 20 mile days, plus a mandatory 1 hour a shift in the gym and since 8 January I have gone from 245 down to 229 this morning.

Commuting is great and since we have such horrid winters here I usually don'n need anymore than a base layer under my jersey to stay warm.

Hope you are still going strong and have the new roadbike!

Hi Allen. I am loving he Specialized Roubaix Expert. I still ride the Sirrus Expert some as well. The weather here has not been consistent enough to ride everyday. My goal is to get my ride in early in the morning to insure I get it down regardless of the mileage. I just want to get a habit started of exercising before work. Since I play golf I am sure there will be afternoons I will not get the chance to ride.

My weight is still not dropping like I had first hoped, but as the weather gets better I am sure it will.

As Dory said in "Finding Nemo" - Just keep swimming! Or more appropriately, Just keep riding. I just hit a 10 day stretch where it seemed nothing was happening, then in a week everything came together!
