I am entering the winter months without an indoor cycling trainer and am thinking of getting something so I don't start over in the spring in saddle time. Any suggestions?

Take an indoor spinning class. It will give you a different outlook from riding your bike but will have you good condition when you start riding again next year.

I have a cycleops fluid 2 trainer and love it. Definitely get fluid over magnet -- it's much more realistic. Spinning classes can be good, but I find there's no substitute for riding on your own bike. Spin bikes often can't be adjusted to fit quite as well as your bike.

I purchased a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine a while back and love it. It may be a little more expensive but worth every cent. I also picked up the Kurt Computer for it for about $50 extra and it will give you a pretty accurate estimate of watts. More information on trainers below:

Hope this helps!

I have a trainer that doesn't get much use because I definitely prefer spinning! The time goes by much faster and it's more entertaining. Plus I push myself much harder than I do on the trainer.

I second Amy's coment on the Cycleops fluid trainer I've had one for just under a year and it's great. Come January I'll be attending spin classes where I bring my bike and my trainer so I won't have to worry about mucking around with the fit on a spin bike (just the hassle of draggin my bike and trainer across town). There are also tons of spinning DVD's so you can do a spin class in your living room.

I did have a the owner of a local bike shop swear that the only way to go was with rollers as it would have a far, far more significant impact on my bike skills but everyone I know who started with rollers eventually broke down and bought a trainer. That said, rollers will force you to perfect your balance on the bike and, from everything I've come across on the subject, will really improve your cycling. Just be prepared to fall off every so often!

Unfortunately, my town of 25,000 only has one fitness center and right now they do not have any room for setting up a spinning class. They have had tons of calls so maybe they will see the need.

Thanks on the fluid vs mag vs wind trainers. I will look into it. I spend my winter months running so that will help keep my legs in shape as well as my cardio, but there is no substitute for saddle time. Plus it will help my legs by cross training over.

Thanks again.
