I admit it.... the very worst injuries are the ones that could have been easily avoided. Last week, once my feet warmed up I began to feel the straps on my cycling shoes were too tight. Rather than take a minute to loosen them I carried on regardless. Next day the tops of my feet hurt. The day after that they REALLY hurt. Best part of a week later they are almost ok, just some slight pain when I walk. The questions I have.... has anyone else here done something similar? If so, did you get back on your bike when the pain was gone? Did you wait another week? No matter what timeline you followed, were there any consequence?
I've not gone to the doctor. I know the answer will be rest, and don't do it again! Its likely I've ended up with some bruising and some tendonitis as a consequence of my stupidity (velcro straps on cycling shoes really don't have any 'give'). The bruising I'm ok with, but the tendonitis worries me in terms of getting back on a bike too soon and ending up turning a stupid mistake into a lengthy problem. Any advice/comments you might have would be most welcome.
cheers

Hi Gerry,
I have had similar issues in the past when I have been off the bike for a while. Mine would start with getting numb toes and then pain would ensue once I loosened of the straps.
What I have since found is that I have quite wide feet at the ball and my old shoes were just to narrow, replacing them with a nice pair of Diadoras using twin staps did the trick.
The key is to adjust your shoes on the move, over a hundred K ride I generally adjust my straps five or six times so that my feet are always comfortable, a desent pair of cycling socks is also a must. |

Hot and cold mix up I find the best, cold for swelling warmth for blood flow. |

Yup.... icing and heating. That seemed to help enormously....even thought it hurt at the time! |

Hi there,
Yeah, I'm thinking of getting a pair of shoes with twin straps, rather than 3. Or a pair with wider straps to help minimize the pressure. Its pretty much ok now. But, oowwwwww, it hurt. I was almost chair-bound for a couple of days. From now on I'll be adjusting straps every time i even *think* they need some attention.
Cheers! |

The hot cold combo worked...... although this time it really hurt to put the cold pack on. Usually I find cold no different to hot. So, I was kinda concerned that I'd done something really stupid. Its almost completely healed up now, some minor twinges. Tonight is my first time back on a bike since it happened. I'm planning on taking it easy.....and paying attention to those straps!
