It's been suggested to me that "getting quiet" or "meditating" would be good to help with stress, get focused, and just improve your life overall. I'm told it can make all the difference help with health, fitness, relationships etc...
When I check online it seems the majority of those involved are women. Which makes sense to me (for no good reason, and I know this is ignorant of me) as I put meditation in the yoga category - really for women, although I know some men dabble in it. Yet, online authorities seem to be predominantly male ...which I don't understand.
Anyway, that's just a little of me so you'll know where I'm coming from when I ask, Does meditation really help? Everybody, or just those who are naturally "in-tune"? Is it something you should do daily? for how long? What does one think about while meditating. I've seen lots about it as a result of a Google search, but can anyone suggest a reputable/reliable authority?
I'm starting out on what I hope is a new lifestyle with respect to my health and I guess I'm really wondering if this can help me stay on track.
Thanks all.

Hope you get some answers back, I'm interested also in the benefit of meditation and would like to add the question, has anybody used it to lower blood pressure and if they had positive results?
When I have tried it in the past, I had a difficult time of keeping my mind clear and called it quits once when I opened my eyes, looked down and thought, wow, these legs need some sun, they are really white!! Is there a learning period of being able to think about nothing when trying to meditate? |

It's not looking good Michelle. I did another Google search and thought maybe I'd post a good link here, but no joy there. There is just soooooo much junk about this. Some say it's so simple, others say it takes a lot of practice. I don't know. I've tried winging it a few times but after about 10 minutes a get up to find it's only been about two minutes. Sitting quietly, and clearing your mind of all thoughts is lots harder than I thought it would be.
Did you come across anything else?

Hi again Michelle. I found a Facebook-type social network on meditation. Don't know if it's any good yet. But I did post the above question there - although their opinions may be somewhat biased, but that's okay. I'll let you know what responses I get (if any). It's a small group (less than 50) right now but if you want to take a look at it the web site is www.lookagain.ning.com

Ok guys, I was hoping you'd get some answers too. Bob, you say you can only do it for 2 minutes...babies crawl before they walk. Do the two minutes. This is a skill. Focus on your breathing and breathe using your diaphram (another skillset). If you go to the local library you can probably take out a CD that walks you through a guided meditation. I think one of the ideas is to really relax the body and the mind; a state in which we never find ourselves. If you google: 'meditation lowering blood pressure' or 'guided meditation' 'creative meditation' or 'relaxing meditation' you'll find some articles. Again, it's a skill so be patient with yourselves while learning it.

Thanks for the great advice Beverly. Maybe I've just been over thinking this and making it bigger than it is. I'll start with the 2 minutes and the breathing and go from there. The tip about focusing on the breathing is in itself probably going to make a huge difference - at least there's SOMETHING to focus on....whi=o knew? -:)
And I'll check the library. Come to think of it, I think they do have a CD/DVD section that would include this type of stuff. It's amazing. 47 years old and still needing the obvious pointed out to me (actually, that'll probably never change)
Thanks again.
