Does anyone know what time of day is the best for a workout?

I believe it's gonna depend on what you're trying to achieve. I know the general rule for weight loss is to exercise an hour or two before your first meal which will boost your metabolism throughout the rest of the day.

Adam G.

I appreciate your input...sincerely. However, it's not really a matter of opinion but more a matter of fact. Cardio exercise has been scientifically proven to boost the metabolism by 200% throughout the day when done early on an empty stomach. While attending the University of New Orleans for Exercise Physiology this subject came up several times. I assure you it is valid information. However, I completely understand how difficult this may be for someone, espescially new to exercise in general. I would agree with you that if you must eat something then keep it very small. However, the body can become "classically conditioned" to recognize routine. Your level of energy output if low initially will build to "optimal levels" along with your levels of endurance and strength.

Adam, here's some additional information I found but there are countless articles and reports on this information throughout the web if you feel like researching it.

Thanks,

Chris

No..not at all.

It's just that there is ALOT of confusion about appropriate time of day workouts. The bottom line depends on what your goal is.

For years I had no choice but to workout in the evenings. And to be honest it was great...something very relaxing about riding as the sun is going down. But since moving here to NJ my schedule doesn't allow me to do long rides in the evening so I've resorted to mornings. The other problem, with me being southern, is that I LOVE fried food and since moving here and neglecting alot of my training I put on alot of weight. So by me being forced to workout in the mornings I've actually been able to get my weight back under control...sorta!

Hi Chris, tj here, we have a couple of things in common. I use to be a moring person at this time i am trying to regain that composure. I am retired, 57 years old 210lbs my goal is 135lbs. I am on ww and exercising, trying at least 5 days a week, most times at least 3times a week. Starting this Sunday, i am going all out, and do at least 5 times next weeks, and stay on program. Next thing you see I am from NJ(Newark)lastly I am from Goldsboro, NC and also love Fried food expecially southern fried chicken. There is hope for us because we are all in this together and will encourgage one another. tj

Hi TJ,

Good to know someone else can sympathize with my horrible lust for southern food. It's just so delicious, you can't resist. My wife has been experimenting lately with alot of healthy substitutes to those "cajun" styles of cooking. Quite honestly...she's doing a terrific job they're really not bad. That actually gives me an idea...do we have an area to share recipe's?

Adam,

After reading all the responses to your question, it is my understanding that the time of day you work out totally depends on you. If you are a morning person then most likely you should workout then and you will stick with it. If you are a night person then nights for you! The main point is that you stick with your exercise program, that is the bottom line. I have found it equally as difficult to workout after work at 5p as it is to get up in the morning at 5a, but since I am a morning person I have maintained a consistant workout regime. Check out my journal entries! :-) Not boasting, just telling you that it works when you find out what works for YOU. Best regards, Nadine

Nadome.Tj here, you are on the money, you have to find out what is best for you, not what the other person is doing. when you find out what works for you then you will be on your way to total fitness. tj

Living in Arkansas the summer months can be very humid and hot during the day and even into late night. Thus, the coolest time of day to train is early in the morning. There are very few sanctioned runs during the summer months here, but if they have one it is scheduled very early in the morning. This dictates my workouts. I am not a morning person per se but for cooler weather I have to train early in the morning during the summer months anyway.

A funny (but true) short answer to that question that I heard once goes like this: Whenever you'll actually do it! :)

I used to roll out of bed and run early in the morning, but I lived in the country then and it was so gorgeous I couldn't resist. Then there was a period where I did tons of weight training plus step classes at night after a long commute -- refreshing, but then I couldn't fall asleep till the wee hours. For the past few years I've worked out in the early afternoon as a "lunch hour" (or two), swimming, cardio, weights. Life changed again and now I do my best to get a workout of some kind in after work.

So I guess the answer is still, for me, "whenever I'll actually DO it!!!"
