Looking for ways of dealing with exercise-induced asthma be they for inside, outside, weights or whatever kind of training (or just plain getting moving). Also wondering if we can start a no cologne at the gym campaign...anyone have any ideas on this? Beverly |

Just this year I began having asthma symptoms on top of my allergies.
Best treatment protocol I have found is this:
*take 2000 mg Bioflavinoids daily
*take 2-3 caps Bromelain daily (start small-can be irritating to sensitive stomachs)
*rub essential oil of Eucalyptus on your lung area and neck, also inhale it
*get acupuncture!

I started having problems recovering from workouts. I could spend 10 hours climbing a mountain but once I stopped, I couldn't breathe. I didn't think it was asthma and my doctor said 'no way, you're in good shape'. A lung clinic finally diagnosed me.
Don't try to deal with it yourself. Get a proper diagnosis and get it under control. There's no reason for it to affect your fitness level. If it does affect your exercise routine, you don't have it under control. I take a morning and evening hit off the puffer and I'm fine. Certain times of the year I don't need anything.
Two places that helped me:
www.asthma.ca
www.lung.ca
(sorry, I'm canadian)
Good luck. |

I have late-onset asthma that, until recently, was symptomatic almost all the time, even with lots of medications. I am 61, male, an avid exerciser, MTB racer and all that. I train and ride some 400 hours per year. I have been to numerous allergists, a pulmonologist, and a nationally recognized clinic in search of relief.
This summer, at the suggestion of a professional trainer, I dropped all dairy and wheat gluten from my diet, along with all things artificially flavored or preserved. Asthma symptoms disappeared in 3 days, re-appear if I eat the wrong stuff such as a kid's birthday cake, and I haven't needed any of the nebulizer-administered drugs until November, when blowing leaves, bane of my existence, caused a 4 day flareup. |
