Hey Dog Lovers,
Anyone have ideas for overweight dogs? I have a five year old Black Lab who was rescued from the pound. He loves to eat and is about 10 pounds overweight. I just put him on a low cal dog food and have started a walking program. Any suggestions? |

Dogs are simple (usually!). Control food portions and increase activity. Remember they need to ramp up like we do. Start out at a half mile or mile, paying attention to how he's doing, and add gradually. I've seen dogs work out on treadmills too! Also, snack=ice cube. Our dog thinks they're treats (with the exception of 'bank treats' that come out of the magic tube when we make a deposit). |

Lucinda,
I have a nine year old Cocker Spaniel that is overweight. We have tried reducing his food and walkining him everyday. He is still overweight! I did some research on line and read a lot about dogs with thyroid problems. I think this is our dogs problem. I am going to take him to the vet when I get back from my vacation. Some of the symptems are: overweight, skin problems, aversion to exercise. All of these things are my poor boy! Although lately he is starting to enjoy our walks, he has always had skin problems. We also got him at the animal shelter when he was 4 years old. The info that I read said that thyroid problems start in dogs after 4 or 5 years, and some breads are more apt to have them. Cocker Spaniels are prone to thyroid problems, but I don't know about Black Labs. Good luck, my dogs are my kids... they truely think they are people.

Thanks so much for you ideas. My guy loves to walk and can do five or six miles. He just loves food so much and I am a softy. I'm going to start measuring his food and using the ice cube trick! |
