From the book, “Nourishing Wisdom (A mind-body approach to nutrition and well-being),” by Marc David (published by Bell Tower, 1991). Its introduction reads:

“For millions of people food and diet are very problematic. Instead of being a source of nourishment, food has become an area of conflict and confusion…is there a way to explain the diversity of perspectives on nutrition and the different ways of relating to food?” On page 94 in the chapter about Body Image it states: “Few people see the body as it really is but imagine what they would like it to be. The fantasy of an ideal body comes with the false promise of eternal happiness and unconditional acceptance by others. The instant we create this ideal image, we begin to feed it, nurture it, and reinforce it as if it were real. We stop living life fully now and wait for a future condition we may never attain.... The secret to creating a healthy body image is, in principle, very simple—acceptance. Acceptance of what is, acceptance of our limitations, and acceptance that an ideal appearance does not guarantee happiness anyway…There is nothing wrong with having an image of a body we desire more and working to create that kind of body. The secret is not investing that image with the exclusive ability to bring us happiness.”

Positive and negative body image changes on a daily or seasonal basis for some, athlete or couch potato, fit or unfit, healthy or unhealthy. Maybe we ought to look at accepting what is now to enjoy ourselves and our lives just a little bit more? How accepting we are of others and their faults (oh, that’s just the way so-and-so is…) yet how tough we are on ourselves (whether it be on body image or something else).

Now tell us about your week~

I stumbled a bit last week. I took a few days off to rest as I was feeling a little pain and then eased my way back into it again at the end of the week. I ate way too much, but it was so good. :D All the big holiday dinners are over now. Just have the New Years bash and a birthday party this week. Much more manageable then 4 straight days of nothing but huge tasty dinners!! Hope ya'll had a great week!!! I'll drop by again sometime Wednesday with a progress report.

I stumbled also! Between granddaughters in town, holidays, travel, and passing my 2nd kidneystone in 3 weeks, I did manage to log about 10 miles! This week is off to a good start. Ran 4.34 miles - rode the trainer bike 3. 0 miles - weight training for 50 minutes.

Nutrition will be the key for the rest of the week! I am in the midst of laying out my goals for 2009.

Have a good week! Happy New Year!!!!

Steve

Got outdoor rides on Christmas Day and Saturday of this past week. Gained a couple of pounds so I only down 8 instead of 10. Got in a solid ride 18 mile ride in today. Temps look good most of the week so I see several days of logged riding to come. Now, to work on the weight.

I not only stumbled, but also fell, rolled down the hill and went off the cliff! I have somewhat redeemed myself by ratcheting up the exercise, and getting back on plan today (well so far anyway).

Good thing New Years is around the corner and I can make some good resolutions.

This week my goals are:

1) to exercise at least 30 min each day

2) to watch the intake

3) to track my food

4) to drink 4 glasses of water a day

I weigh in at Weight Watchers tomorrow, so that will be a good wakeup call!

Happy New Years to all!

Ingrid

Hi All!

Finally recovered enough from being sick to go back to exercise after two weeks off. That's two weeks of lying around while eating homemade holiday cookies and bread non-stop.

The equation looks something like this:

75 cookies (peanut butter + chocolate chip) X (2.5 weeks - exercise) = 4 lbs.

I'm not really a 'math person,' but even I can see a correlation there.

It feels good to get back to working out, except for being very sore!

it's so good to hear from each of you. Keep up the good work! of course, we're gonna eat a bit more this time of year. It's all about balance and to do without the good stuff is not a good balance. I'm down 3 pounds from this time last year and that's good enough for me. I'm really looking forward to my hiking next month. I've got to get wireless internet capabilities so I can track my progress

Hi all. I, like some of the others, didn't accomplish much this past week. I was dreadful on water~didn't hardly drink any. CRAZY. I don't know what, if any, resolutions I will set for 2009 but I do know that I'm starting back to moving this week...starting yesterday. So according to the opener I shall accept and move forward! Glad we're doing this together :) Beverly

hey, I just wanted to let you all know I was still sticking to my no fries commitment. I think I'll hold that till the end of the challenge.

Happy New Year Everyone!! So far so good this week. Starting to incorporate some strength training in now with my treadmill walking and elliptical trainer. Haven't figured out exactly what my resolutions for the new year will be yet, but I have a good idea. I'll try to post them tomorrow. :D

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a great Christmas and are looking forward to a even greater year coming! I had a wonderful Christmas and I still haven't done any strenght training but before I lay my head down tonight, I will do a session. Food is good but I do need to cut back on the salt...I just can't seem to get enough. Otherwise, I'm happily rolling along. Glad to see good habits in my life so I don't have to fight with myself so much (except with the strenght training). It sure makes life easier. I know how hard it can be to resist temptation. I consider myself fortunate because I was so afraid of dying that nothing could get me off track so I was able to stay with it long enough for first my tastes to change and also because of the better nutrition, my body didn't crave the junk any more. I don't think too many people get as scared as I was and have to find another source of motivation if they don't have a will of steel. So with my walking at work group that I lead, I try to encourage them to increase their nutrition by eating more fruits and vegetables and leaving the junk to special occasions so that their bodies have a chance to change and the fight is really over. You feel good and your body is healthy and you just don't want junk any more. I don't think I have a body image problem or maybe I'm just too goofy to realize it, hahaha! Well, I sure hope you all have a wonderful New Years celebration and we can head back on track for our healthy new year! I'm going to get up and do some cardio right now to warm up my muscles for the strenght training. Take care!

Alex

Happy New Year to Everyone!!

Good to see you're back Alex - we missed you. Oops, Loretta, I messed up on the No Fries thing - but I just can't have a cheeseburger without fries. I must be more mindful of that.

I too have been sliding downhill for the last couple weeks. All the cookies and candy are gone from my house now - I'm ready to get the system cleaned out and regulated again. Tomorrow, I'm going to spend the better part of the day cleaning up from the holiday stuff and I'll have to do some rearranging. I have to work Friday, so will finish up on the weekend if I don't get done tomorrow.

I've been doing pretty good with my water intake. Through the rest of the weekend I will continue drinking lots of water - watching my food intake and of course, whatever exercise I can get in. By next week, I'll be more focused and ready to implement something more lasting.

Thanks again Beverly for giving us such good things to ponder. Here's a toast to 2009 - may it be our best year ever. Jane

Last 9 days have been with my dad. Like a lot of us, keeping to a routine when you are out of your normal one isn't easy...if that makes sense. From my dad's house down to the cut through to highway 7 and back is a 5K. Ran/walked once and walked with Sharon another day. Saw a few critters and critter tracks. Also discovered that I was more than likely the only person in North Mississippi with shorts on and the temperature in the 30's. Drove back today and both of us are tired from driving in traffic. I'm kinda a scared to get on the scales after eating out so much and snacking. Trying to figure out now when to start back training for the bob-o-thon.

Only gained 3 pounds from Thanksgiving through December as I weighed in this morning. So, all in all not too bad for me. Got out in some brisk 40 degree weather and rode 13 miles on the bike. Felt a little sluggish as I cut my 20 mile ride short and headed back to the house. But a good beginning to 2009. Happy New Year everyone.

Hope everyone had a great New Year's!! I went out and celebrated and spent the better part of the day chilling and recovering from partying so hard. I did manage to get on the treadmill and elliptical and also worked on my abs at the end of the day. Ran my 1st mile of the year and am feeling good. Getting back to where I was late last summer will most likely take most of the year. Which leads to my goals for 2009:

Run in at least one Half Marathon

Run in the 10 mile Crim and not choke half way through

Run the 8 mile Mackinaw Island race

Run at least two 10ks

Run in at least two 8ks

Run in at least four 5ks

Help plan/manage at least one 5k

Possibly run my first Marathon.... this one gives me the heeby jeebies as I've only finished one 1/2 marathon and barely finished..... how the heck do I do two 1/2's the same day?....

Here's how I expect to attack these goals:

January and half of February continue to rehab my injury to where I can run a minimum of 3 miles in minimal pain. Mid-March run my first 5k or 8k. April, pick my 1/2 marathon to run in and train accordingly. Also, training for the 10 and 8 miles at the end of summer. If I have conquered another 1/2 before the end of summer possibly continue training for the full marathon....

I think this is all doable. The next month and half will be crucial to racing again mid-March and thereafter.

Have a great weekend everyone!!

Scott

Happy New Year everyone!

Well, my cold is finally (mostly) gone, but I am feeling human again. I've been very scattershot in my workouts the past 2-3 weeks, and I've been cheating in my soda consumption, so really, not good. But I'm only up 1 lb, so I'm counting that as a win. As I type, I've had my oatmeal and my ONE permitted can of soda for breakfast, and I've got a bottle of water next to me. I have some cans of seltzer in the fridge, that's allowed, and I'm holding myself to no more sodas today. And I'm renewing my FJ membership because my goals have not been met and I obviously need some accountability!

3 for 3. Working on my real goals for the year too. Maverick got 3rd of 3 today. I think that's why I prefer stuff that isn't so subjective. Who knows, tomorrow he may get winners dog :) (please, oh please, oh please!) Yoo-hooo any one out there?
