Smiled lately??? Your smile (or frown) can make a difference. “Happiness Is Contagious” Recent research from Harvard Medical School and the University of California, San Diego, reported by several news outlets including WebMD on December 4, 2008, and the Chicago Tribune on December 5th, showed that your happiness can influence the happiness of someone you have never met. The original study was published in the December 4, 2008 issue of the British Medical Journal (BMJ) and was conducted to evaluate whether happiness can spread from person to person.
…The results of the study shows that this happiness transfer extends to the third degree. This means that the happiness of an immediate social contact, called "first degree" increased an individual's chances of becoming happy by 15%. The happiness of a "second-degree contact", for example the spouse of a friend, increases the likeliness of becoming happy by 10%. And researchers showed that even the happiness of a third-degree contact, such as the friend of a friend of a friend, will increase the likelihood of becoming happy by 6%.... Been saying this the past few weeks...
"I'm feeling better and less and less pain.... should be able to start becoming active again"
Well, It is finally gonna happen!!! Last class is tonight!!! YAY!!! I'm feeling great and there is next to no pain. Gonna start out slow however. Just picked up a new elliptical for the basement yesterday and got it put together. (with professional installation help from my bro) Gonna be using the elliptical alot to start out with and then gradually switch to the treadmill and then come spring time start running outside again.
So, the plan this week
Minimum of 4 workouts on the elliptical for 15 minutes each time
Continue drinking a minimum of 8 cups of water a day
Watch food intake
Minimize alcohol consumption (will be hard with finishing school, big celebration to come :D)
7 weeks to lose 5-10 lbs Is this doable? I think it should be, but I'm not a pro at losing weight so only time and commitment with tell.
I'll be checking in again Wednesday or Thursday! Have a great week everyone!!

I had a good week riding for this time of year with 3 days of riding, but I got off base on my eating and actually gained 2 of my 10 pounds lost back. Not a problem. I will get it corrected this week.
I got my indoor cycling trainer late last week and the weather forecast calls for several days of bad weather, so a great chance to spin indoors. My goal is still to lose 10 more pounds (I guess 12 now!)during this challenge. |

Hi All!
Well I am in the middle of a deep freeze with no motivation but to curl up by the fireplace with a cup of coca. I will have to really work to pull myself out of hibernation.
Last week I did well with my tracking and was down a few pounds.
This week I will continue tracking and add exercise. I hope to add a good habit for each week of the challenge and enter the New Year a few pounds lighter and closer to goal!
Have a great week everyone.

Hi Challengers!
Have spent the last week doing bicep curls with soggy kleenex, and have been too sick to exercise. I've either had the flu or just about the worst cold ever! I'm looking forward to feeling better and getting back to it, though.
My goal for this week is just to get back to normal. Hopefully, I'll be able to do something by the end of this week.
Sometimes, with a little break like this due to illness or some other interruption, I fall completely off the wagon and become inactive again. Does anybody else have that problem? (Gotta keep an eye on me, folks!)
Have a great week, everybody, and stay well! |

So far so good this week, my elliptical time is 5 minutes off on both days so far because my legs feel like jello after 10 minutes and would quit on me before 15 minutes were up. Made up for it some by walking on the treadmill for 20 minutes last night. Feels great to be able to do active things again! Happy hump day everyone! Enjoy the rest of the week!!

Don't let the busy times derail these 6 weeks! These weeks are important as we are pushed to our limits in time and nutrition! Make a date with yourself and continue to steadfast! If you can FINISH STRONG - you are well into finishing the year off on a good note. We need to be thinking about 2009 and what we want to achieve - but don't let the last 2 weeks of 08 be a diasappointment.
FINISH STRONG!!!

Hi everyone! I'm going to jump on board for the challenge, I didn't realize that Beverly started it here in Random Chat, so I didn't see it when the last challenge ended. And I haven't been logging workouts because I haven't really been working out - I got laid off, and so once again, I am unemployed for the holidays. But I think it's enough of feeling sorry for myself and get my ass in gear again.
Goals?
Drink water, get in some form of daily exercise and lose weight during the holidays - even if it's just a couple of pounds.

Sorry to hear that news Dani! Yeah lots of cutbacks. Im hoping the job i'm starting in Jan is more "secure" than the one i'm leaving. A little worried on that. And my fiance's company has rumors that there are going to be some layoffs soon.
It's rough right now, and with Christmas just around the corner so many things going on. My main focus is just getting through all this ruckus and making sure i'm not forgetting anything along the way.
My "new" food goals for this week to continue through the challenge are:
- avoid sugar/sugary foods (only a little sugar in coffee)
- high fibre carbs only (absolutely no fries)
- lots of fruits and veggies
- and smaller portions at dinner
And things to be doing instead of watching TV:
- play the instruments sitting in my basement!
- organize/do things for the wedding
- plan meals for the week/cook
- and ofcourse exercise!! |

Hi all,
I posted my goals in last week's thing, but since its this week and not last week, it makes little sense. :)
So here are my goals:
1. Work out 5 days a week, alternating between running and weight training.
I currently run anywhere between 1.5 and 3 miles. The idea is to run up to 6 miles by the end of this challenge. This will mean picking a great route that long.
2. Lose 10 pounds and go down at least 1 dress size.
3. Have control over eating late - NOT eating late, especially sweets at night, cus that's where I get myself.
4. Stay hydrated and nourished - eating well continuously
I dont like overdrinking, as I dont actually think this hydrating stigma is legit. My doc grand father never told people to drink as much as they say in the US, and unless you want to, unless your body wants to.
So I listen to my body, and drink a healthful amount, not to the level that I feel bloated, which 8 full glasses of water a day make me feel. if i had 8 glasses of water on top of the coffee and tea and juices I'd drink, I'd explode.
Anyway, sorry for the digression. |

Tania,
what a great idea. No fries! I think I'll meet that challenge. Anybody else in? if you say you're in, then you have fries (even one) you have to confess. and then we'll get the wet noodle after you. I'm having a great time. I treated myself to 4 sessions with a personal trainer. the guy I have is encouraging and great fun. so no fries this week for me.

Walked for an hour this morning. I don't really understand why I'm so worn out since I didn't finish the marathon. I do have plan B. Another wacky idea from bobo a tron.
I'll get back to training as soon as I can and do the first and maybe only bob marathon. I have a route that I can go that is as much as 29 miles so I'll pretend I'm in a race and try to reach the finish goals I had for the real marathon. The exceptions are that I won't have Dallas Police stopping traffic while I cross intersections which will add some time but my Garmin has a way to stop the timer if I go 0 miles per hour. I'll also pick a day when it's cool....no cold and the wind isn't gusting to 35 mph. Maybe if I don't have 12 thousand people trying to pass me I won't get nervous and develop stomach problems. Then again there won't be t shirts, finisher medals or space blankets but Sharon could be the official photographer. Oh and what ever you do don't tell the Kenyans. This will be the only "race" I'll ever have a chance of placing in and I don't won't to spoil it.

No fries!
Of course, I don't really eat that many French fries, I don't eat fast food very often, even less if I'm not working, so not really a sacrifice.... ;) |

This has been a good week despite the weather here. I was able to get my Cycleops Fluid Jet Pro trainer set up downstairs and the bike installation was a breeze. Got two indoor rides this week and am hoping to catch a good outdoor day Friday to get on the road again for some significant miles. Indoor trainers are BOOOOORRRRING, but I am not letting inclement weather move me back to my comfort zone on the lazyboy with my remote and cold beer. Well, maybe a beer...:)
Still holding onto a 10 pound loss since 11/8/08, but have reached a plateau. So, I am trying to work through that. |

Good job Gary! Remember the 10 pound sugar or flour bag...if you doubt yourself, go grab it and carry it around for 10 minutes.
How are the rest of you guys doing?
HAPPY FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!! |

If I didn't have to work today I'd be at home snowed in!! Been doing pretty good so far this week. Still have no pain and have been active the last 4 days. Plan on getting on the elliptical again tonight along with either a walk on the treadmill or ride on the indoor bike before we go out to dinner to celebrate my graduation. :D Haven't looked to see if any weight has been shed. Gonna check Monday morning. Crossing my fingers that at least a pound will be shed since last Monday. With all the snow, maybe I'll take the nieces and nephews sledding tomorrow. :D That's always fun! Have a great weekend everyone!!!

Way to go Scott! So I'm thinking 'bout my goals for 2009 and there's at least a half marathon in the works (starting from ground zero-yikes) provided the knees will honor the brain. I was going to shoot for one in April (thanks to a nudge from Bob) but don't want to push it that far that fast. What are you guys thinking about trying next year? |

I've got a couple of half's that I'm looking at for next year, but not until Sept and Oct, I'm thinking of a few 5K's earlier in the year, and an 8K and a 10K are also on my radar. It's nice to have something to shoot for as I sit here unable to breathe! I can't stand head colds! |

I want to ride in and complete a Century in 2009. Depends on when they are scheduled. During the winter months I am not able to get in the needed base mileage. So, maybe late Spring I will be ready or at least ready for a 50 miler.
I got in 2 trainer rides and 2 outdoor rides this week. Looks like I will be indoors until at least Christmas due to weather now. It is important that I continue to watch my food intake between now and January to keep my weight loss going in a positive direction. |

Hi All -
What motivation to go into the new year with - everyone talking 5K, 10K, Half Marathon - it really does help to start thinking about these things now.
We've been having a lot of severe cold and some snow with it - so outdoor workouts are out of the question at this point - except for the shoveling snow. I am re-commiting to utilizing the treadmill more and staying out of the kitchen as much as possible. The water intake has been pretty good most of the time and I've been doing good getting proper rest.
I will finish out the year stronger - more focused!! Good Luck to you all. Have a great weekend. Jane |
