Is gatorade it or can I supplement my water intake with something that works better than gatorade. I live in the south and summer workouts are taxing with the heat and humidity. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Gatorade is good, I also have tried Propell and some of the SoBe energy drinks. I know that you can get very fancy with your re-hydration drinks, but the basics have always worked well for me.

I may look at Propel, but as much sweat as I lose during summer workouts I may need the full strength of gatorade.

Thanks for the quick responses.

Hi Gary

I would suggest SPIZ, thats right, SPIZ. Although i don't use it exclusively... if I need to do some serious miles or repeated tough workouts, I go with SPIZ.

I first learned of SPIZ while I was crewing for Ed Hensley as he rode his bike from Badwater to Whitney Portal last August. The only thing he consumed shy of a couple of bagels for the entire 128 miles was SPIZ.

I don't get anything to endorse their product but man it is good!!!!!!! Read all about it at http://www.bikescor.com/product/drink.htm

I am also looking at Accelerade. http://accelerade.com I have also bookmarked the SPIZ site as I will try that later this summer and maybe do a A-B comparision. I can see SPIZ being good for my up coming marathon training this fall.

Both sound better than gatorade.

Good conversation, even tho I joined it late! Anyone know if they make any of these drinks without sugar? Thanks! Beverly

Hi Beverly... I'm no nutritionist but I know that sugar is not sugar... there are different types, so I don't think that I can answer your question... but you might check the ingrediants in SPIZ to see if their "sugar" molecules are right for you,

I live in the heat too and unfortunately I haven't found anything that works better for me than Gatorade (I like the taste but it has so much sugar!). I hate artificial sweeteners so I don't like Propel or any of those.

Some of the folks I work out with like Smartwater, which is water enhanced with electrolytes (no sugar or flavor, so it just tastes like water). Any opinions on it?

(I should add that I'm not an endurance athlete - my workouts are in the 1 - 2 hour range; the only thing longer is when I go hiking.)

For those who think that Gatorade is too sweet, try diluting it with a Gatorade/water combo. It doesn't taste as good but you can still get the benefits of Gatorade without the harshness of the sugar plus you get the benefits of water. That is usually how I fill my water bottles for triathlons.

After going through about 48 oz of Accelerade so far I can say for myself that it is much more effective than gatorade or water. My recovery seems quicker and my rehydration time is much shorter. I am going to try SPIZ when it arrives later next week to compare.

Spiz is as good as advertized. I personally mix mine with skim milk and use a blender. Adding a banana or two to the mix makes a great meal or energy boost.

I work out a lot including soccer and a lot of weight training. There has been new research that has found chocolate milk is the best recovery drink. It beat out gatorade and other sports drinks. After intense endurace exercise your glucose is low which is a key source for exercise. To replace the glycogen, a serving of carbs is recommended within 30 minutes.

Gatorade supply these carbs, as well as fluids and electrolytes lost through sweart. But research has found that adding protein may further help recovery.

I have tried this and I was ready to go back to exercising quicker and my muscles did not hurt as much after weight training the next day.

Just thought I would put my two cents in :)Also, chocolate milk tastes way better than gatorade :)

I agree with Gary. Of the sports drinks I've consumed I have found Accelerade to be the best. It's not all about replacing Carbs, you need protien too for recovery.

Now, Accelerade is being marketed in a ready to drink bottle. That makes it that much more attractive to me as I hated to have to mix the powder.

OK - I agree that the Accelerade with a bit of protein is good. I use Cytomax a lot on my rides, and it seems to work well. I find that at about mile 45 of a 60 - 7- mile ride, I love slamming a Coke. It seems to give me a little pick up to get me home.

Finally, I highly recommending using the drink they will provide at your next event. It is good to get the body used to it.

I use SPIZ on my longer workouts and races. Because I don't like to eat anything solid during training or races, this works well for me.

Gatorade is something that is so commonly used. But to me when I drink Gatorade or any sports drink to get rehydrated, I have to water them down a little because it makes my saliva very thick and then I feel even more dehydrated. So for me, I think all sports drinks works for me, I just have to put some water into them so I get the full affect of them. I hope that works for you.

I like gatorade, but I have come to love Vitamin water. It just has such a great taste and it has so many good nutrients in it.
