Last winter I attempted running outside with my mesh style shoes and found it very uncomfortable -- feet where always freezing and resorted to the indoor treadmill. Do you have Any suggestions as to what has worked well> More concerened with the sub 30 deg and wind and snow coverage blowing but not deep. Do trailshoes work or are they too stiff and heavy, What about crosstrainers like a newbalance leather. Thanks for any suggestions. |

I love running outdoors, but if it was below 30 degrees AND windy with snow, I'd opt for the indoor treadmill. If you are still adamant about running outdoors, I've heard about some winter socks that should help. Road Runner Sports (www.roadrunnersports.com) may have them.

I have larger shoes that I wear with a thicker/warmer sock in the winter (smartwool or fleece). I don't necessarily use trail shoes, but try to find a shoe that has a more solid upper rather than mesh (many Nikes do). If icy, I really like yak trax http://yaktrax.com/ |

Thanks for all the good feedback.
I think I'll also take up the advise on the Yaktrak -- if they work as well as they sound I'll pick up a pair for my elderly dad who walks everyday outside, but has been worried over the weather and even getting in and out of the car on slippery days
thanks again

I read in Runner`s World that putting duct tape of the mesh holes will help as well. I don`t know if that is your cup of tea. I am trying to get back into running again. It`s been a long time and I want to run the Air Force Marathon next year. I am currently in Japan where is snows like crazy. Do you guys know an internet site that sells discounted winter running gear? |

Try Gortex Trail running shoes...Marmot, Keen....I forget some of the brands...but I live in Chicago burbs and w/ 14" of snow we got on Friday, the trail shoes are the only way to go. Trailshoes are awesome!! Sturdy and cozy.
Good luck! |

I use the Yak Trak pro... and LOVE them. I got them for Christmas last year, and used them the rest of the winter! It kept me outside in the nastiest weather, I hate to run on the treadmill! Paul, as a fellow Wisconsinite, I can say that winter running is the best with the Yak Traks on leather shoes.
Keep Moving...Tammie |

Thanks Tammie,
I will keep my eyes open for them at a few of the running and sporting good stores. They will make a nice Christmas gift for someone to give me, as they dont usually know what to get.
Happy running
