Dang, I hate dominating the discussion boards but I do have another question for everyone. Does anyone have any tips or sites that would give me some insights on breaking in new running shoes?
Thanks. |

Wear them for walking during the day for a couple hours, as you do normal daily activites, also in the house. Adjust the lacing tautness...shoes shouldn't need much 'breaking in' so sometimes it's just learning how they fit your foot. Too tight/loose lacing can make a big difference. Pay attention to tightness at bottom as well as the top where you tie them. On my current runners I don't use the very top hole for the laces...cutting off circulation (a big duh by reading a fj post!). Hope this helps. |

Beverly is johnny on the spot. Too tight laces across the top and you will cause a nerve on the top of your foot to excrete pain. Also, make sure you have a good snug heel fit. You don't want the shoe to move freely up and down back there. Other than wearing the same thickness socks ( I would suggest running socks and not cotton)with each run you will find how much lacing tightness to do.
Also, be sure to add your shoe to the shoe track list here at FJ so as you record miles it will keep track of the number of miles on each shoe you have. |

I agree with Gary about the socks..."cotton kills"!
Also, on my current shoes, I've undone the laces from the top and bottom holes for my right foot. The laces are really only going through 3 holes in the middle. I've noticed that my right foot is a tad bigger than my left and was falling asleep after about mile 2 or 3. Undoing the laces from those holes and making sure not to tie them very tight has alleviated this for the most part.
The point of my story is this: Make sure you do what works for you...even if it feels like a weird thing to do. :)

David,
Runners World has some cool ideas about lacing your shoes at

If you get completely bored and think you have seen everything check out

As you can tell I don't live a very exciting life.

Bob,
The fieggen site is nothing less than facinating. I am too analytical to be that creative with the shoe lace variations. Maybe too lazy to attempt to try lacing with some of his methods.:) |

After looking at all those lacing techniques, I get a whole new appreciation for "the Velcro thing" :)
