Hello,

I started running in October and bought a Sansa MP3 player. I downloaded some of my CD's and created a "running file" with my favorite songs. I now want to update my list of songs. I only want to download a dozen or so songs, I don't need the ability to listen to all types of music. Can I purchase songs from I Tunes for my Sansa or does it have to be an I POD product??? If so is there any way to purchase songs without paying the monthly "rental" fee? I went to I Tunes and it started converting all my downloaded CD's and I got overwhelmed. I'd appreciate any advice. Please keep in mind I'm new at this, be gentle:) Thanks, Kathylyn

Kathylyn, I'm new to the mp3s too. I got one for Christmas, downloaded about 100 songs from Napster because it came with the mp3 player. Supposedly 2 weeks free. Well, it was free for 2 weeks. After the 2 weeks was up & I didn't subscribe, none of my songs would play. They were still there & still on the computer. They will still play on the computer, but you can't put them on a CD or mp3 player.

I thought about getting an i-tunes card, but I think you have to subscribe to i-tunes to even do that.

In my opinion it's a rip-off. I downloaded songs from my CD's & that's what I listen to. I know this probably didn't help you much, but I needed to vent a little.

Kathylyn -- I don't know if you've gotten your questions answered yet, but in case you haven't...

(1) on iTunes, there isn't a monthly fee for the music. You just buy your songs. Its 99 cents for digital rights protected media (DRM) and a little higher price if its with out digital rights (no copy-protection or DRM-free).

(2) The songs downloaded from the iTunes Store are in iTunes format which your Sansa may or may not play; however you can make an audio CD from an iTunes playlist (edit/preferences/advanced/burning; then select the format (audio)) then rip that disk back to iTunes using mp3 encodng at 192 kbps -- then your sansa can play it. (If subscribe to a podcast, it will download in mp3 format anyway).

(3) I think iTunes was just adding the CDs you had ripped to its library -- I don't think it was changing the files. You probably ripped them in mp3 format and it won't change the format unless you tell it to. iTunes plays mp3 formatted files, as you know.

Have fun and feel free to ask more questions, if you have any.

Thanks Will for the information. After much frustration and a friends help I was able to do just what you recommended. Thanks so much, now it's written down so I will be able to do it on my own when I want more songs.

Yet another question...my iPod mini is starting to not hold a charge. I was getting my husband a radio/mps (sansa clip) anyway so I bought 2 and got the Best Buy/Rhapsody free for a month. My computer hasn't been the same! ISSUES!! ERRORS!! I figure it's a driver thing and have since taken out all my iTunes and Rhapsody stuff and am now left without a music library. Where did it go? I do have a backup on my iPod itself.

Thoughts on switching from iPod to MP3 anyone? Is it worth it? My husband is happy with his 'clip' but I'm still in limbo.

Thanks kindly!

Oh yeah, one more thing...Why use Best Buy/Rhapsody @ about $15 a month instead of going directly to Rhapsody @ about $13 a month?

Beverly,

Long Post -- get some coffee!

It sounds like your iPod mini needs a new battery and considering you've already bought a Sansa and Rhapsody, the advice I'm about to give is probably out of date!

Regarding the iPod mini: You can either take it/send it to Apple to have them replace the battery or look around online and do it yourself. All iPods will eventually need a replacement battery, and unfortunately, Apple didn't make it easy for someone to do. I personally have no experience in replacing iPod batteries but I guess I wouldn't do it yourself unless you're experienced with that sort of thing. You could also buy a new iPod -- they have more features and longer battery life.

Regarding iPods and Rhapsody files: Rhapsody is a music rental service, which is why you have to pay $15/month ($180/year). iPods do not support the rental format that Rhapsody uses so you had switch to a different brand of mp3 player. With iTunes, you buy the music and its yours. I don't know what the errors are that your computer is having so, it's hard to tell what the problem is/was.

Regarding iPod backups and mp3's: The latest iTunes allows you to backup your iPod -- just for the case you have now. You may wish to reload iTunes and backup your iPod; I think that will restore your iTunes library. iPods will play normal mp3 files, not just their proprietary format their music comes in. So, if you buy mp3 files from Amazon, say, the Amazon webpage can load it right to your iTunes library and off you go. Plus, iTunes can load mp3 files to other mp3 players, like your Sansa Clip, I believe. I'll try and research that this evening or later this week.

If you've survived this missive, you're ready for a marathon! Feel free to respond with any more questions you might have

Best wishes,

-- Will
