Debbie-
For one thing, I walk fairly slowly compared to a lot of other walkers, but I know that I can't go the distance if my pace is too fast. The other thing I would suggest is to increase slowly..don't go from two miles to 5 miles right away. I would increase in small increments..once two miles does not completely exhaust you, walk for 5 or 10 minutes further. Do that for a week or so and increase another 5 or 10 minutes, and so on, until you are up to the mileage you want. My first time on the treadmill I lasted about 5 minutes and ran for the showers; three years ago, I walked a marathon, and will walking another one this weekend, God willing. Just be patient with yourself, and make sure you drink enough water; and wear supportive, cushioned walking shoes.

Hey Debbie - Glad you are here! I started by wearing my pedometer all day, just to see how far I walked every day...then I started trying to increase that by 1000 steps at a time, each increase several weeks apart...after a while I found my self parking in the furthest corner of the parking lot, going to the rest room at the other end of the building, taking a quick turn around the building when I needed a break, a quick trip around the block when I get home, carrying less each trip from the car...so more trips - etc.
I rarely have time to just go for a walk, though I do that some weekends when I go to the mountains...but most of the time it is just my daily routine. my current goal is 12,000 steps average a day, 42 miles a week. If I can hold that through the winter, I will up it again. Point is, I started by figuring out how much I did normally and then slowely increased it.
The big thing in my mind is to keep the goals achievable and sustainable, keep them up for quite a while before ramping them up. Good luck, we got a good crew here, I am sure you will find encouragement and help here.

Hi Brian thanks for the encourgement. Need some help. I get on the treadmill just about everyday. I also wear my pedometer all day. What I do is count the steps from the treadmill, when I am finished I reset it for the rest of the day. What do you, or any one in the group think? Should I continue to reset or should I just continue walking? When I reset, I usually get at least 5,000 or more steps plus the treatmill it comes to at least 10,00 or so. If I don't reset, I could count more steps. Please give me some feed back. Thanks, tj |

another helpful thing is using this site because even if you don't have as strict schedule and or a buddy to walk with....even if have go for a stretch without exercising----------you can still look and see what you have done already.
you never quit or have to start all over because you have documented what you have done
that is motivating, believe me
and you don't have to compete to feel good about it, a marathon is not necessary, only that you continue to move your body and do things to improve your health
you will find it helps your life in many ways and I am happy you will find that for yourself
this is a positive thing + |

Debbie, like I said, I just wore it all the time and set a baseline. if walking on the treadmill is a new activity, I would keep those seperate, but add them at the end because they are purposeful exercise...and count as steps. Did that make any sense? you want a base line of what you normally walk in your regular day...hence not including purposeful exercise. But at the end of the day, you want to count all the steps you took that day for total exercise, and miles...and at 10,000 a day, you will hit that 25 mile mark fairly easily.
Once you have a good baseline...with and with out planned exercise, you can then start setting goals, and working towards more steps, more miles etc. the important thing is to keep at it, day after day after day. once you have your baseline...you can add them all together if you like and just make it a daily goal to do your 10,000 or 12,000 or a weekly goal or what ever...or you can keep them seperate as some here do, as they like to look at exercise as exercise and sperate from daily living - you get to make that choice on your own! ;-}}
Hope that helps. |

Hi,I am new to this site..just joined a few days ago. I have been walking 4 miles for the past 3 days and am loving it! Of course the wonderful weather we have been having helps! Everyone has great motivational tips here and hopefully I will use them when I need them the most. Do you usually have a day off or do you try to walk each day? |

Hi Laurie, glad to have you to our family. Personally, I take Saturday off, but, that is my personally choice. So your rest day has to do what is best for you. what exercise do you do? What food program are you on? Turn your share on to who you want to check on, and you can see what that person is doing. tj |

Hi Laurie..... someone else from Michigan! We have been lucky lately with our weather. I have been a walking fool, trying to get as many miles in before the snow starts flying. I still want to walk in the snow, but I don't think it will be as good a workout, or if its blowing, I don't think I'll want to be out in it...lol Welcome aboard! As for your question, right now I am walking everyday, but I usually take a day off and I've read it's a good idea to do so, so your body can recoup. Have a great weekend!! Walk on! :) |

Antonia,
I have chosen walking for my exercise and am not on a food plan right now. I figured that I better just work on exercising daily and then work on the food:) I haven't been eating nearly as much since walking so that is very very good! I guess I will see how I feel after a few more days before taking a day off. I just have a hard time starting back up once I miss a day. It has been 6 months since my last attempt at trying a walking program. |
