Hi. I've been reading various articles promoting lowfat chocolate milk as a recovery drink after exercise. There was a study done at Indiana University Bloomington that compared it to Endurox R4 and Gatorade.

Anyway, I've seen the chocolate milk idea promoted at various sites, and was wondering if any of you have practical experience with it? Thanks. John

John,

I don't have any experience with this, but would love to find out more. What sites have you seen it on? Anytime I can justify having chocolate I'm willing to try :)

Hi Tammie. It's all over the place - walking.about.com, stackmag.com, whymilk.com, askmen.com, and tons of others. If you Google

"chocolate milk" recovery drink

the second or third link down will be a news site for Indiana U Bloomington where the study was done. A coach there tried chocolate milk years ago when his swimmers were having problems with two a day workouts. He was so happy with the success that he went on with a formal study.

But a lot of people these days accept the four to one carb to protein beverages for recovery, and everyone pretty much agrees that the lowfat chocolate milk meets those criteria. And I know I can pop into any convenience store around here and find it. It was paid for by the Dairy and Nutrition Council.

Let me know what you think after you've done a bit of reading. Take care. John

After I posted before I just googled Chocolate milk recovery drink and I found all of the sites you mentioned. It sounds really good to me. I love chocolate, but being that I'm really trying to lose those last 10 pounds I don't eat it often. Now I think I will get myself some chocolate milk and drink it after my hard work outs. I'll let you know how it works for me.

John, Tammie

I know you folks are doing your best to reduce body weight. After reading your posts in several different threads, I can see that you are both making progress and you should be commended for that. I led with that because I hate to see people get sidetracked with "fad" fixes.

I am not a doctor, nor am I a scientist. I am, however a fulltime dedicated athelete. I put in over 20 hrs a week working towards a race goal. I utilize any and all healthy means of reducing weight, while increasing speed and endurance. I am coached by 6 time world triathlon champion Mark Allen. (None of this is meant to pull my own chain, but to show that I incorporate most of my advice on a daily basis. I analize all my daily data and change things where and when needed....)

OK, that said.... Low fat Choc milk has a GI of over 40. (Glycemic Index). This means that it releases insulin quickly into your body. That, in turn means that unless you are vigoursly training, then it turns into stored fat. STORED FAT!! That's the last thing you or I need in our quest to get healthy. You can read more on GI at http://www.glycemicindex.com/

I would suggest that when you are deciding what to put in your mouth, that you go to this site, and ref: the GI for the food you chose. Then decide if you really want it. I also use this website: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/index.html to track the nutrients in everything that goes in my mouth. Just type in the food and out comes everything you could need to know about it.

Just trying to help~ Kim

Hi Kim. Thank you. I always thought that immediately after training was the one time you wanted to take something high glycemic to take advantage of the glycogen replacement window. I got that from Covert Bailey's Smart Exercise years ago.

My plan is to start doing the ninety minutes of exercise a day that experts are now recommending for obese people to lose weight and keep it off. Since I'm starting full-time grad school next week on top of a full-time job and a two hour commute every day, that ninety minutes will have to be continuous cardio in the mornings. Then three evenings it's Nautilus training at the Y.

Covert actually reccomended pure junk food sugar as the quickest source of replenishment, but again, only in small amounts and onlly within the first twenty minutes after exercise.

I work out at 5:00 AM, so I'll need something immediately after exercise, and it has to be something convenient. I was planning to go with just a single glass of maybe 150 or 160 calories because I can drink it in the car.

Thanks for the response. I used to be a runner, and a guy who could play playground basketball all day or three tennis opponents back to back. I don't want to just lose weight, I want to be an athlete again at the end of it, even if it's just classical fencing again.

Have a great week. John

Kim,

Love the website, it is chocked full of all different stuff other than the simple calories/vitamins etc. In fact I looked up one food, and then wanted to know more indepth about some of the "Chemical" they posted such as beta-sitosterol. That led me to another great website (where I spent even more time researching) and I want to post it for others. This is a supplement review/watch website that is like a consumers digest of supplements - they don't take advertising or money (or so they claim) from supplement advertisers - http://www.supplementwatch.com/suplib/

Some of the services they cahrge for, but for those who want to take supplements this is a good place to start for some info.

John,

I gotta tell you that I would not recommend the post workout sugar/sweets replenisment. It's a reversal of your goal. After a long workout, even 90 minutes, I would consider keeping an ice cold premixed container of something like "meso-tech" protien/carb shake. Even Myoplex makes a great shake. These come in a box of 24 packets. You can mix it up in a nalgene bottle before you leave for the Y. Throw in a few ice cubes to keep it nice and cold. Then when your in your car afterwards, you have something that will put carbs in your body to replenish energy.....you'll have the necessary protien to rebuild muscle breakdown....and you'll have volume and taste to satisfy the need to feed.

The hardest thing to convince people of is that 1/2 lb a week is the optimum amount of weight you want to lose in order to keep it off permantently. Your going to lose more than that at first due to water retention, but after the first month of consistent weight loss, you shouldn't expect more of yourself than 1/2 - 1 lb max per week. This is a lifestyle change. It took a long time to put on your present weight and you shouldn't expect to strip it all off in the first 6 months.

Water....Water...water.... Hydrate!! Drink enough water that you are making hourly trips to the bathroom. This is flushing out the bad stuff and keeping you hydrated as well. Give me 3 weeks of doing this and I will stake my next race on your weight loss success. You are 70% water and I assure you that it is the key to reducing body fat %, viceral fat% and your overall metobolic age.

Good Luck and stay motivated.
