One of my initial goals in beginning my workouts (walking and running) is to lose weight. During the first 2 weeks I lost 5 pounds. At the end of that second week and now into my 3rd week I have leveled off and have actually gained a pound here and there. I was alarmed at first until I noticed my calves and thighs were getting stronger as I increased my workouts. I am hoping to see this plateau end and the weight loss continue as I workout because one of my goals is to train for and complete a marathon. Anyone else experience the initial weight gain due to increased strength? |

I sure did. A couple of years ago I got a diagnosis of borderline high blood pressure and went into high gear to shift my eating habits and get really serious about renewing my commitment to working out. I joined an online weight-loss site that tracked calories in and calories out etc and followed strict guidelines about limiting sodium etc. I was eating better than I ever have in my life and working out as consistently as I had a few years earlier, and staying hydrated and really paying attention to what was going on with my body. The first thing that happened was a weight GAIN instead of a weight loss (so I didn't even have the encouragement of dropping five pounds!). I couldn't believe it, but I kept at it and sure enough after a few weeks suddenly the scale weight starting dropping, slowly but surely. I know a LOT of people from that other site who had the same experience.
Keep on keepin' on, Gary, it'll come off!!! It HAS to!

I have not completed a marathon, but that is one of my goals, albeit, not in 2006. It will have to be a 2007 marathon at the earliest. At age 53 and being sedentary for so long I have weight to lose and a heart to grow stronger. I am glad I am starting out using a heart rate monitor. You are correct, my pants fit better though the weight has not really dropped. I am hoping with the increase in workout times it will finally drop. Thanks for the encouragement. |
