Melissa,

I am training for an Ironman and I am not a very good runner so that is my "arch nemesis" as it has been said before for others. I would be happy to try and help you out. Right now I am running about 1 hour twice a week with a longer run on Saturdays. They range from 1.5 to 2 hours. That maybe a little long for you right now but we could keep the same schedule and be accountable to each other.

Jim

Well it sounds like you have a good plan so far and way ahead of the curve. When and where is your race? Yeah, my ipod went cahpoohie on me this last time. I think the sweat had something to do with it. Now it won't hold a charge.

Good job Denise!!! It sounds like you have a good plan also. Train smart not hard and get those base miles in. I just added both of you to my friends list. Maybe we should all check in with each other every Monday. What do ya'll think?

Melissa actually helped me this morning with my run. My 1 hour weekday runs have been lacking because of heat or time constraints and therefore the hour is more like 40 minutes. This morning I pushed myself to get in the full hour because I had told Melissa that's how long I run so I didn't want to be a fibber. =)

Hey there! I'd like to join in too. I call myself the tortoise, if that gives you any indication :) My goal is to finish and I am clueless as to the time. I am running the RnR Marathon in Phoenix January 14th, and it is my first. I have run a 5k, a couple years ago, and that's it for the races. I'd love to join a ost that focuses on the run itself. What a great thing! Beverly

Okay, well the weekend is over and I managed to get in a 1.5 hour run on Saturday. Felt pretty good and I kept a nice easy pace the entire way. Luckily the heat was not a factor since I was up early to get the run in before going on a running club social. During the week I was able to get a 1 hour run in and a 30 minute run. I could only get the 30 minute run on Tuesday because I had to be in court that morning. How did everyone else do?

This next week maybe a little harder to get in my scheduled runs because I seem to have messed up my knee on a Sunday ride. I may need some R&R before starting back on the training plan.

HEY Y'ALL!!! I did terribly :(

I lost my motivation and started eating relatively poorly. However! Reading your wonderful posts adds inspiration in my heart. I'm also breaking in new orthotics which are posing some problems, such as blisters, on my runs. Ah well, so much for my WHINING. It's back to training tomorrow and better eating started today. I like this running oriented string. Thanks!

Thanks for asking Denise! I had a good run (run/walk) of 14 miles with a half mile warm up and cool down b4/after. Felt really great! Sorry about yours, but you did it. You did do it and that is good! I found I wasn't as tired afterward, immediately or thru today. My body must be gearing up. I've been debating whether to run the half or the whole in January, and I just don't know. Orthotics have been an issue and I see the pod tomorrow to check 'em out. Beverly

Last week was not so great because of illness but I managed a 40 minute run/20 minute walk Tuesday and a 37 minute Thursday with nothing on Saturday.

However, this week I think I am getting my mojo back and finished 1 hour today so that is a good start to this weeks schedule.

My two cents from a two bit runner.

So far because of the heat/humidity I have had to run on a treadmill. Hopefully it will drop below 90 soon. This outdoor running season (September-May) I'm going to try a triple shot halfsies. My goal (not to be associated with any common sense, intelligence, or the little voice inside saying "you want to do what!!!!) is to run a half in November, December and again in February. Now seeing as how my speed can be timed on a calendar and that it slows progressively with each mile, I figure by the time I complete the third one I should be going backwards. The other pesky part is that my cardiologist told me a half was almost to much for me. He said some other things but when I heard the word almost I put my fingers in my ears and started going la la la la la. I guess all that to say that I seem to be goal oriented even if I bite off more than I can chew. I appreciate getting ideas and help with running these longer distances. My wife, doctors and I thank you.

You'll do it Joanne! If you can run 5 then you can do 6. If you can do 6, then you can do 7. And so on :) Beverly

This week was pretty good but STILL not what I want (the HEAT is horrendous). Managed 1 hour on Tues and a ROUGH 1 hour on Thurs because of leg training in the gym Wed night. Saturday was a run in the woods so NO breeze and muggy. Managed a little running but kept moving for at least 1.5 hours so at least it was something. Total miles 18+

How about everyone else?

I followed my training schedule this week, I'm happy to report! My long run was 7 miles this Sunday, but I walked 3 more since it was so nice outside and I was enjoying myself. The dumb part was I did some stairs a few times which I learned isn't good for me to do on days over 4 miles :) I have a 10 mile race on 9-23 which terrified me a few short months ago. Now I know I can do it and that's really cool. Beverly

Ok, my marathon buddies...I'm freaking out, sort-of. I just entered my training plan until the 1/14/07 Marathon and I typed in numbers like 26 miles. Yikes! I know I did the same freaking out thing when I was typing numbers like 13 and survived that, but geeeeeeesh. Am I pushing this marathon thing? Should I 'just' be happy w/a half? Then I tell myself...see how you feel after your 10 mile race on 9/23, that will give you a clue. I know I don't have to decide the w-h-o-l-e marathon thing until 1/13 so why the nervous butterflies in my tummy all of a sudden? Blah........ Breathe. OK. Thanks.

It's like the riddle: How do you eat an Elephant? One bite at a time!

If your goal is overwhelming focus on the weekly goals and don't look too far ahead. Your idea to work towards the race in September is an awesome idea - give yourself a short-term goal to keep you psyched and on track and to keep your mind off the big one. Building up the distance is a matter of persistance and dedication - you are completely capable of that and will be fine.

I think the butterflies are required (you're not serious about the race if you don't have 'em). And when you're doing your third or tenth marathon you'll laugh about how nervous you were for your first!

I started some Interval Training last week so Tuesday I think I completed about 5 miles. With the slow long training the interval training was tough. My legs forgot how to go fast but eventually they got better. Missed Thursday because of life but I finally got in a 12 mile run on Saturday with our running group and that included plenty of hills.

Last week was another slack week because of other distractions but I am planning on hitting it pretty steady this week. IT seems to be going well with the long run Sat and a long bike ride Sunday (70 miles). Today is a rest day so intervals start again tomorrow and I will add another half mile repeat.

Denise that is AWESOME about the new PR and 3 minute shave!!!

Use a port-a-potty on the course :)

Ok, I couldn't run last Sun...legs too jacked up from new orthotics (that are now in the dump pile and being remade!). Using my old ones my legs have gone back to normal and I ran a 5 mile on Mon and yesterday a 6. Since I couldn't finish a mile wo/pain I am very (!) happy. Now...do I revamp my training schedule or get back to the one I planned (I was supposed to go 15 that Sunday and a 7 this Sunday)? Thanks too, Alison, for the good words in your post. I just have to remember that I like butterflies and think they're beautiful :) Beverly Happy running y'all!

PS I need an answer for those 'kind' folk that tell me "running is bad for you, it's hard on your body." Anyone?

I am down for the count...or at least until my toe heals. I have a toe injury that has brought all of my training to a screeching hault. =( It is very depressing and frustrating but hopefully I can get back to it next week.

Ok, I'm here! Thanks for asking! Running, hmm. Yeah. I have just made the decision to do the half marathon in Jan, not the full. What w/the orthotics causing pain setbacks it messed me up. I totally feel for you Jim on the toe injury. Ow. I've gotten in a couple 5 milers. Bought new shoes, now more stability oriented and did a 3.25 mi run in them. So far so good. I still have my 10 mile run on Sept 23, which is what I need to gear up for now. I know I can do it, just not how long it will take me! Finish is my goal there. My long runs have been totally interrupted with this mess so am building back. I miss it and I do love the fact that I've "only" run a couple 5 milers and a 3.25. Do any new (or formerly not serious about it) runners out there have a tough time 'feeling' like a 'real' runner sometimes? Just curious. My hat is off to you all!!!!! Stay safe and keep running :)

I've decided to sign up for a half marathon in November. It's a nice small one (several hundred people instead of several thousand), I've done it before and have always had great times so it should be fun. My tri season just ended and I'm feeling a little uninspired but reading everyone's posts here is helping get me back in the mood.

Beverly, I love your line about butterflies being beautiful! I'll have to remember that one.

As to how to deal with people telling you that running is bad for you I generally answer back either:

If you train intelligently it's fine.

or if I'm feeling stroppy:

Sitting on the coach watching TV and drinking beer is better??

and if I'm really feeling argumentative:

Name me a sport where you don't have a chance of getting hurt? Heck people get serious injuries just from sitting at their desks at work! (How long I go on in this vein depends on how much coffee I've had and/or how annoyed I am.)

Finally, if you're out there training and putting in the miles you are a "real" runner, no if's and's or but's!

I managed to get in a painful 11 mile run Saturday. Everything is sore now so I am waiting till tomorrow to try another run day. I also completed a 75 mile bike ride so the toe seems to be better.

Melissa, I think I ran with one of your Columbus training buddies. Her name is Debbie and she is training for the Marine Marathon. She was a pretty strong runner and she and I took off from the group for the first 7 miles. She says she works for the Historical Society or something like that. I asked if she knew you but she said there are a lot of Tidwell's and she doesn't know everyone in the running club/group. She also mentioned someone in their group found a dead body while running near the river. Does that sound familiar?

Glad to hear about the great run, Melissa! I think I'm getting back on track, so to speak, went on a 6 mi jog and walked another 4. Funny, my legs got tired! Ha, not so funny since they weren't used to it again. Today I got my new, new orthotics and am thinking I won't be doing any serious running in them till after my 10 mile 'race' on the 23rd. I say race in quotes because at this point I'm back to looking at finishing. I'm back though, other than the orthotics coming into play. Hopefully they'll be right this time (if not I know to not try and work w/them as long as last time). So, I'm still on target for the Half Marathon in January. Just booked room reservations and am looking for a deal on flights.

How are you doing Jim [How's your toe]? Alison [thanks for the good words, btw]? Denise? Kim? Bob? Joanne [October is around the corner]?

I've finally gotten around to my weekend long run this week starting at one hour. It was with my group and was supposed to be an easy trail run. Don't know about you but my idea of easy is not going straight uphill over loose rocks! We didn't do that much distance (luckily I'm training based on time anyway) but I figure there has to be some sort of calculation whereby you multiply the actual kilometres run by the meters of elevation gained to get your flatland distance! Melissa, it was unfamiliar terrain and debates over whether the piles of scat were left by bears definitely kept things from getting boring.

My half isn't until November 19 so I have lots of time. I'm running based on time not km and am adding 10% to my long run each week in my attempt to run a (very optimistic) PR of 1:55 for the half.

Happy training to you all!

Great Job Melissa!!!!

Well, the toe is fine but I think I started back training too soon. I think the infection moved around and now I have new problems. So, I can barely walk today and per Doc orders, I cannot run or bike which I missed a race last weekend and had signed up for a race this weekend. Another entry fee flushed down the toilet. This means that Ironman is now in question and I may have to miss it also which is a BIG loss of entry fees. Very depressed.

Oh well, I just have to take the time off and let my body completely heal and get back to normal. "Patience cricket"...yes I know it is grasshopper but I like cricket better. =)

Jim, AW MAN! Sorry for the problems! Melissa, sounds like you're doing great! I now have orthotics that work, but, the shoes need adjusting. So I'm working with all that, have a great person at my local running store I found. I mean great. I was a bit hesitant of getting out there this morning (I made up excuses, it's cold; nah 51 perfect, it's too dark; got me a couple fireflies and reflective belt) but it was awesome once I did! I had to cut it short, tho, since in the middle I remembered I had a phone appt. for work at 7:30. That turned out all right as I had to run a bit faster to make it to my car to get home on time :)

Hi fellow runners!!! I had a good week this week. I was really nervous (butterflies are beautiful) about my 10 mile run since I have not run more than 6 for a long time--weeks! Well, Sunday I completed 10 miles in under 2.5 hours and that is what I need to do on Sat. I've got some hills to climb tho, whew. I ran part of the course on Sunday and went off trail a bit...as I'm struggling to make it up a trail hill I came head to head with a buck. I smiled and turned around quickly to get back down that trail...looking back to make sure I wasn't being followed!! Then, on my way down, I almost stepped on a snake! I jumped and then yelled, get me back to civilization!!!!!! So, interesting run. I slept in this morning and will go for a run here shortly, perfect...sunny, in the low 60s. My legs are still tired from Sunday but today will just be a s-l-o-w jog. Going to boot camp tomorrow, then a walk on Fri with Sat being the 10 mile innagural Oktoberfest run (with my husband there to cheer me on!).

Glad to hear about such good runs you ladies! Melissa, you got it done :) Jim, we're still thinking about you and wondering how you're doing.

ttfn, Beverly

Melissa, your post about backpacking and running not mixing made me laugh as I did the same this weekend. Went for a long hike on Saturday with a friend then was beating myself up on Sunday for feeling tired at the 10km Terry Fox cancer fundraiser run. Only when I got to the 5km mark did it occur to me that 3.5 hours hiking up a mountain (and 3 coming down) might be a valid and forgivable reason. Being tired from that plus the darkening days and begining of the Vancouver rainy season (Sept - May, give or take three months) is making it hard to be energized about running this week.

Sounds like everyone is on track with their double digit runs, too bad mine was kilometers not miles!

Bev, were you wearing a heart rate monitor when you saw the snake and did you notice a spike? Spot the running Geek - every normal person would run away from a snake but I'd be the one going "Wow, my HR just hit 170!"

I have another fundraiser run coming up which complicates training as it's short, 5km, and I want to be doing a much longer run that day. I promised my mother ages ago I'd do the Run for the Cure (for breast cancer) with her and I can't back out as 1) she's my mother, and 2) she's a breast cancer survivor. I guess 3) would be it's a good cause, a good excuse to be with family and missing one weekend won't kill me.

Ladies,

Thanks for the concern and the toe is better but that was not the end of the infection. I don't know if it moved around but I ended up with an infected cyst and was JUST about to go to the Doc for surgery after almost a week of pain and a weekend of excruciating pain, but fortunatley with home treatment and a lot of prayers, it resolved itself Monday. I am now on the healing end and recovery from the infection so I will be taking about 3 weeks off from any training to let my wounds heal and immune system get back to normal. I DO NOT want any more experiences like the last few weeks.

Can't win for losing.

Jim

I'm a peep!!! And I'm a running peep again, as of this a.m. To kick myself in my proverbial bum, I signed up for another Half yesterday...it's here in STL and is on Nov. 12. I wanted to sign up for another 10, which there is one later in Nov, but I couldn't figure out how to register. So, I bit the bullet and went for the half. OMGOSH! Funny how a week off and the body seems to say, "WHAT?" when one starts again...so I answered, run silly :)

Glad you got your 10 in Melissa. I had a thought this a.m. (yes really!). When I was starting out I thought, how in the world did I run 10 miles?????? I just did. Once you get started you just keep moving. So, bringing it back to your comment about not the best 10, I'd have to say they were a great 10 just because you did it! A bad/slow/tough/whatever 10 is still 10~ and 10 ain't bad :). So consider yourself part of my motivational team girlfriend! OK where are the rest of you peeps???? Beverly
