Trent, there's a formula for figuring all that out, when your BMI changes. You are replacing fat w/muscle. I don't know how to figure it out but I know somebody here should be able to shed some light on it :) Keep up the good work, I'm sure your clothes must feel better on you.

Don't panic. If you are being upset by what your scale says, keep exercising but don't weigh yourself as often. When I started to lose weight I got bigger too. The first thing I noticed was the BMI shifting. There is a good article about it on this website. It is also very important not to eat too little. Your body cannot build muscle if you don't eat enough. My understanding is 1500 calories is absolute bottom for women, for men I am sure it is more. Eat well, but increase your fibre and low GI foods, and keep sugar and high fat especially saturated fat foods to a minimum. I weigh myself every two weeks min, when I started I would only find out when I saw my trainer every 4- 6 weeks and she would do a complete assessment. To start with I lost inches and my BMI went down, but my weight did not go down much and I actually got bigger for the first month. I' m glad I stuck with it though, because since Ausgust I have lost about 15lbs, and I have gone down a clothes size, and my BMI is down several points too. Not to mention that I feel heaps better, and my emotional state is vastly improved.

Good Luck, and stay on this site. It has really helped me to get encouragement from the other people here.

Trent,

Hang in there. It will do you good to mix it up a bit too. Have a really high eating day-kind of like a day off-and then for the next several days after that-eat really low-then a day or two of average eating.

Also, I seem to either lose inches or pounds-but not both at the same time. If you are staying the same or gaining and you know you are eating right and exercising regularly-then take measurements. At LEAST once a month you should be doing that anyways.

How much water are you drinking? You should be drinking TONS of it for that amount of exercise. WITHOUT exercise you should be drinking half your body weigh plus eight ounces in water. Then every mile you go is another cup of water. Every time you drink something with caffeine, you should add TWO cups of water. Water is what pushes the fat out of your body AND is what rids your body of the nasty stuff.

Am I a medical professional? NO. But I HAVE lost almost 100 pounds so far and have learned what works by trial and error.

The food looks healthy. Lots of fresh veggies if you are hungry. No one got fat from eating fresh veggies. Sugar free jello is a great thing. I also like to snack on popcorn. You get lots of bulk and as long as you buy a low cal version, you will get the bulk of being full without the rest.

The protein will keep you full longer as will fiber. Oatmeal is a great choice. Another great choice is fiber one cereal and a boiled egg. It will keep you going for HOURS and the fiber one cereal has HALF the recommended daily fiber in only a half a cup-and on most diet programs it is considered a free food (at least until you add milk).

As for the working out, do you work out in the evenings? if so, you might want to try working out earlier in the day. Your body is raring to go after a workout and it needs a little down time to slow it back down and prepare it for sleeping.

Something else with food-try and get the bulk of your food in early in the day. The closer to bedtime you eat-the more chance it will just sit there and do nothing. When you eat more calories in the morning-you have alllll day to use up the calories. Same thing with exercising early in the day. When you exercise early in the day-you elevate your metabolism and it will stay slightly elevated allll day.

And yep-I started this at 300 pounds. This morning I was 207 on the scales. I have a loooong way to go before I am done, but I am more than halfway there. :-)

Trent,

Good job so far. I usually weigh myself in the morning, night time weighings are never very good for me.

You said your heart is racing some evenings. That could be a sign of overdoing it. I know you say you use a heart monitor, however your training zone could be very different than somone has been exercising for several months. You should check out some of the postings on heart rate training zones. Do you take your resting heart rate in the morning- again, there are some other postings on this. There are formulas for determining your training zones and max heart rate based on your current heart rates at resting and after exercise along with your age that might be more accurate than standard age formulas for you.

I also don't see a lot veggies in your diet, or nuts. Both are important in keeping you healthy especially your heart and arteries. Veggies have lots of good chemicals for you, more than simply vitamins or fiber. You still need oils, just make sure they are good ones, flax seed, fish oils etc... Good luck to you, and Heidi, great job on your gain ( or losses!)

Trent,

Good for you! That is money that is going to be well spent! I read a quote by a cosmetic surgeon that said something like - People should just take the money they were spend on my services and hire a personal trainer and nutrionist for 6 months, and work out and eat right and get enough sleep. Then when they come to me we can work on trouble spots.-

That is a good choice, someone to motivate you and help you get in the right direction, without hurting yourself. Injuries and lousy workouts will make you give up your goals quickly.
