A thought out loud...does it really matter the actual tracking of the extra calories burned if you feel better and clothes fit better? Sometimes I get bogged down in the details rather than enjoying the walk. Would combining a HR monitor help calculate calories burned?

A heartrate monitor would be ideal. I use the Polar F11 (www.polarusa.com or heartratemonitors.com). It will record your calories regardless of the terrain you are walking on because it uses the heartbeat to calculate the calories burned. The HRM monitor stores your height, weight, age, gender and automatically calculates your HRmax. Then you can determine the HR zone you want to stay within to maximize your fitness and/or weight management. Walking in the 60-70% of HRmax is ideal for weight loss.
