Hi Kapua -

I just want to let you know how impressed I am with the goals you achieved in 2007. I am interested in learning more about your desire to walk/run a half marathon. I ran two marathons (ages ago) and I can share some of my hard-earned lessons about training to achieve that goal if you are interested. I think the 1/2 marathon is the perfect distance - you will be challenged to finish and with the right amount of training you won't be dead on your feet at the 13.1-mile mark.

One of my goals is to "go the distance" a few more times, but walking instead of running. Maybe we could team up?

Have a fantastic day!

Katie

drop me an email let's get moving! ;-)

You got it! I'm not very good about getting away from my desk at lunch, but I'm willing to make the effort now that I've got some incentive and goals to achieve. Would you like to set aside time tomorrow to walk & talk around the park? My calendar is open so far...

Here are a few things to think about as you start planning for your 1/2 marathon:

How many miles can you walk in 1 hour right now? For example, I walk at a 4-mile/hour pace on the treadmill at the gym.

What is your mile/hour goal for the 1/2 marathon? When I trained for my first marathon, my goal was to walk/run an average of 5.25 miles/hour in order to finish the marathon in 5 hours before the streets were reopened to traffic. (I actually had 5 minutes to spare at the finish!)

When do you want to accomplish this goal? My first marathon was the 1996 California International Marathon which starts at Folsom Lake and ends at the Capitol. This marathon takes place the first weekend in December and I started training in approx. May of that year.

How much time can you dedicate to training each week? Can you fit a regular workout routine into your already busy life and stick to it? Believe me, this is the hardest part!

There are a lot of local walks/runs in our area that benefit various organizations - the entry fees are tax deductible! The Sacbee used to list them in their sports section - I haven't checked in a long time. These walks/runs are a great way to build your confidence and track your progress toward your goal.

I hope I didn't scare you!! =O

This will be a rewarding experience for you - I know you can do it!

Hi everybody! It's so good to see how we are growing! There's almost 60 of us signed up now, woo hoo!!! Congratulations Gerry on your weight loss! That's always good to see those numbers go down! It's work but it's so worth the effort. Hi Kapua! I'm looking forward to hearing lots of success stories from you too! So glad you are on the road with us to good health! I think we are going to be starting up our walking here at work again. I'm going to a meeting with Darrin with the American Heart Association next week about National Start Walking Day so I'll post the info out here for all of us as soon as I know what we have planned. It should be fun...I may be hosting the weekly walks. Oh and hi Bev! I met Bev over on the 12-week Challange thread under Weight Loss Section. She has a great group over there reaching goals together. Feel free to go over and check her group out and you are certainly welcome to join them any time. They are all dedicated and friendly and lots of fun too! Ok, I'm about ready to head home now and do my workout. Take care everyone!

Gerry,

Thanks so much for sharing this site with us...and getting a great deal, too. I have been struggling to lose weight for a few years now, with no success. The tools on this site are fantastic. I set a goal on April 9 to lose 17 pounds by the 4th of July, reasonable. I am ecstatic to report that I have lost 4.1 pounds in the last 10 days!!! And it's all due to the Food Journal. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't lose weight before, but when you can see your calorie intake, and what you burn, and see the balance, man is that enlightening and motivating! I know I can do it. I also decided to reward myself when I reach my goal, not with some indulgent food that I love, but with an hour massage, good for the body and soul. This has really changed the way I look at food and eating. Good luck with your goals!

Christina

Isn't this weather beautiful...hard not to get out and move around!!!! It's so neat to see people from around the State joining in...remember to recruit a fellow CDFA co- worker and get absolutely nothin except that great feeling when you see that person come alive!,

Enjoy,
