pun intended...

The fitness and goals parts of FJ are awesome -- really helpful. It'd be great to see the Food Journal step up to plate next! Calories for individual food items rather than lumping it all together for each meal or snack, ability to enter 'custom' data (i.e., could enter all info for a particular meal or product that doesn't appear in the list), 'goals' for eating (i.e., ideal percentages for amount of fat, protein, and carbs), ability to choose ways to measure food rather than just those in the beta guide (e.g., 'apple' can only be entered in oz! I have noooo idea how many ozs a medium sized apple is), and, of course, seemless transition between whereever/whatever is used to look up foods and their info and the food journal itself so the data is transferred automatically into the journal.

So far, out of the other diet and fitness e-journals out there, I've found fitday. com's manner of following food intake really great. Simple. Easy. They even give you the ability to see if you're getting the RDA's recommended amounts of vitamins and minerals! And their little pie graph showing the split between carbs, proteins, and fats for the day/week/month is a great visual.

Just my 2 cents!

Tammy

hate ta say it -- but after logging every calorie and seeing all the nutritional breakdowns etc on another site, and agonizing over the math (omg did I eat enough not to go into starvation mode, did I exercise enough to earn that night at my favorite restaurant etc.) AND getting a massive bilateral RSI b/c I not only spent a lot of time mousing and clicking to add foods to my diary, but I am also a software analyst (you do the math!), I am SO happy and grateful to be able to just...you know...type in what I ate and drank today and rate it myself.

Soooo...I'm all for ramping up the food diary part, but ooo boy Chris, if you do that, I hope you also leave the plain ole writin'-it-in part for those of us who are content with that! :)

onward and upward (or downward, weight-wise!!!)

See, my problem is I'm not eating enough calories. Yes, I know - everybody wants that problem. But I had no idea that's what was going on. So needless to say, my body's been hanging on to every last thing I eat (as have my hips!), just to be sure it has what it needs for my otherwise fairly active lifestyle. So I need the added data to track myself and watch when I'm not eating enough! But I also need to watch the balance of things. Hopefully, it'll get to a point where that's not necessary - healthy eating habits will have emerged from tracking things for a while!

And just cuz the possibility to do things is there doesn't mean that you have to use it!

Yup -- very true! I have a friend who had the same issue -- she was working out like a madwoman and just maintaining maintaining maintaining at a weight she didn't like. She added 600 calories and boom -- gone! So I get where you're at. I hope you get what you need! Meanwhile, hang in there :)

Yes, you have to take in enough calories and of the right type! I had a young female college student who was on the crew team, running for ROTC, and playing intramural basketball yet she was 30% or more body fat and exhausted all the time and was a slow runner. She ate cereal for breakfast and lunch and soup for dinner and maybe a junk food snack somewhere in there. I convinced her to start treating her body like an athletes body and increase her protein intake. We have to be happy with small changes, I can't expect dramatic overnight radical changes.

She started adding 2 protein drink to her diet and did a personal best on her crew 2K erg dropping from 8:28 for 2K to 8:06 in just 6 weeks. Her other coach adn I also made sure she had one rest day a week and each dropped a workout from her schedule to make sure she was not overtraining. She also became regular in her cycle for the first time in her life. Demonstrating that there is a correlation between diet and exercise will start her on the right track. I know she is pushing for a sub 8 on her 2K time. She is also consuming carbs after her workout. Her body form is changing, slimming down, and she is running faster.

You need to feed the machine!

Chansonette,

FOr your RSI, (repeated stress injury) have you thought about using a Dragon Naturally Speaking. I used it 5 years ago and it was good then. I know they upgraded it. You can surf the web with it, it interfaces with windows, office and more. It saved my wrists when I was working on my masters at night and alot of computer stuff during the day at work, and riding the bike. Even a couple of hours at night with out typing was a godsend. It was worth every penny I paid for it.

Thanks for that suggestion, Terry! I've never even heard of that, although people have mentioned using some kind of voice-recognition program. I'll look into it. My workstation is about as ergonomically correct as it's gonna get and I still get flared up if I'm not really rigorous about doing my stretches etc.

Just a thought Chris,

I find it way to time consuming to use the food diary on FJ and have gone back to using a fantastic one called Dietclub.com. It is so easy to use and has all your standard portions, brands etc. It uses the drop and drag feature so your just time in a few letters of what ever type of food or brand and bingo up it pops. Then you just click which meal its for and it does a running total of Fat, Carbs, Protein etc. You should check it out.

Only problem is it doesn't marry up with your program.

regards Merrilee

I soooooo agree! I just tried WeightWatchers for 6 months (lost 10 lbs! hoping the next 10 will come off with the newly found runner inside me). And I got so tired of entering in EVERYTHING. I just found this fitness journal on Monday and signed up yesterday. Great way to keep track of what I eat (b/c I DO need to do that), without forcing me to figure out everything that's in it. wahoo! hehe...

somebody posted something about a site for food tracking -- www.sparkpeople.com -- a while back and I've been using it ever since. You'll get what you're looking for there while we wait in eager anticipation for Chris to upgrade the food log area. It's free. It's not a fitness journal so in my view it's really inadequate compared to this site, but if you want to track what you eat and get the nutritional values etc it's really QUITE fabulous.

I use both. I do my food stuff there, and everything else here.

I do the same thing as Chansonette. I LOVE FJ's tracking of exercise, but use SparkPeople for my food.

thanks for turning me on to sparkpeople - I started using it for the food journal, and then I transfer the totals in here - works great - I just wish we had a chart that showed the same data that the home page shows - when you add in your food and your exercise for the day, you get a reading on whether you are burning more calories than you are taking in. It would be great to chart that over time - this is a great way to see patterns in your behavior, and to make sure you are working your program every day. Sometimes I find I don't get my food journal filled out until the next day - since I am tracking it in sparkpeople - then I don't get the home page feedback - I would like to be able to see that data anyway, as a graph or chart or even a data table - thanks
