Doug,

Sorry I am sending a very late response to your question. The reason being, I just subscribed to Fitness Journal today. I have had the same question for a long time. Yes, you are right. Packaged items like Yogurt, bread, milk, etc has label on the package but, what about vegetables, steamed rice, home made soup, etc? Even though I haven't started practicing this suggestion, I thought this could help you. There are weighing machines for daily food that could measure upto 1 pound (I am not sure about its capacity). You may use that to measure the components of the food and you may have to take some time every day to find out the calories of each component. You can do this till you have gone through almost all of your daily food. Everytime you prepare a custom food at home and once you find the calories, you may have to note it down in your journal. This way, when you repeat the food some other time, you will exactly know how many calories that food contains.

Hope this helps.

- Suresh

P.S: Once you measure the components of the food, to find out the calories of each component, I can suggest you some websites that could help you. All you have to do is, find the calories of each components and sum them up to find the total calorie content of your home made food.
