Hello,
I am wondering if any one else is questioning the accuracy of the food journal. I have been keeping up with my food intake over the past three or four days and have found quite a bit of a discrepancy between the pro, carb, fat sums of the Food Journal and my own calculations. Mind you, I am no mathematician but I am consistently coming up with a difference of 30-50 grams. I am just wondering if anyone else is noticing the same type of problem.

Hi Micah
As with much of life, I verify much of what I learn, therefore, while using the food journal, I take it as a open book where many good meaning people put in alot of information. Since I am not able to verify where they are getting their info at the time of their entries...I search the many multiple entries and cross reference it with what I have and then select the info closest to what I have and go with that. If nothing matches...I enter my own information from the product package or the manufacture's web site.
This only a guide and is quite helpful to me when I need to get an idea of input v. output,
Enjoy,

Micah, I agree with Gerry. If I search for say Heiner's Bread & get this off the wall number, I hit Custom Entry & put the info in from the package. Sometimes you see food items listed with 0 fat, 0 carbs, 0 protein. You know that's not right. Anybody can make a mistake.
Just enter your food/compare with what is already listed. If you don't agree with it, enter your numbers.
Later. |

I appreciate everyone's response. I took everyone's advice and clicked on each food journal entry to verify that no one had mistakenly entered in wrong numbers when they entered the food into the database. When I calculated the fat grams (from the entries from the food database) I ended up with 34g of fat. However, when I view the overall summary for day, it list me as having eaten 62g of fat. Am I missing something?

Perhaps you could give us a specific example so maybe with all of us working on it, we could figure it out...my first thought might be to consider the actual amount, or serving size...correct units... |

Thanks Gerry for your offer to help,
Today is a good example of what I keep running into. I have charted my food intake up until lunch. I had a protein shake (4g of fat), a salad (og of fat), and 2 Zone Bars (14g of fat total) so far today. This leaves me with roughly 18g of fat consumed today. However, when I look at my food chart it list me has having consumed 34g of fat. I have no idea where they get this number. I have checked to make sure that the food amounts that I enter are right in the data base and have not found a problem with the entry. The only thing I could think of was that it was some sort of error in the program. But, no one else seems to notice a problem.
So...I dont know. I am using the Fitness Journal for the free one week trial. I LOVE all of the features. It is just this consistant miscalculation that really bothers me.
Thanks again,
Micah |

I think I just figured out the problem. I eat A LOT of Zone Bars. I entered my own entry into the database and was using my entry on the food log. I checked and double checked it to make sure that I didnt put the wrong numbers in the wrong slots when I entered it in. I just now decided to use another Zone Bar entry from the database (other than my own) and the numbers came out right. I dont know, I guess it didnt like my entry. Hopefully, the mystery has been discovered :) |

When you enter a food it takes the fat/pro/carbs from all the ingredients within the food. A salad that has eggs in it will have fat in it as well. The same for the salad dressing. A rule of thumb is this: if the food comes from an animal it will have fat in it. The food journal is a great guide that allows you to see what you eat and what your getting from the foods you eat versus what you are burning. I use it more as a guide and realize that it may be off. If I don't have the food label to enter the food I use the Complete Book of Food Nutrients (also can be off a bit) to enter the food values. It all depends on when the information was entered and updated. Labels change from time to time due to serving sizes changing to meet FDA guidelines. Also not all labels contain all the information that the program requires. For example some labels do not list potassium. |
