One goal I had was to reset my map to 1-1-2007 and try to get accross the USA in one year.
We are now 1/2 way through the year. I am at 1530 miles and the total is 2830 miles. So I am on pace. I know many of you are ahead of me, and many close behind as well.
Who else is up for this challenge?
If the USA map is not challenging enough b/c you are a full time cyclist, then maybe the Canadian map.
Just a few notes. If you do not want to lose your progress on another country, you can reset the date to 1-1-2007, then set it back to your member start date. This will allow you to see where you are. I am closing in on Lincoln, Nebraska.
Let's see how many can have a good finish to 2007.

Jim, I am hoping to get across the map as well. I am at 1688 just a little ahead of you. I find the map very inspirational. I am always up for a challenge, especially being a Tri newbie :)

Any others?? |

I just entered my home province on the Canada map - I can't start a new map now!
Maybe a map challenge for 2008 starting in January. |

Alison - Just look at the date on your maps. Memorize that date (probably your member start date).
Then change the date to 1-1-2007, and you will see where you are on the 2007 challenge.
After seeing where you are, you can enter your memorized date again and you will STILL be in your province.
Pretty cool huh? Let me know wherer you are.

Business and family commitments outweighed training.
I finally hit Des Moines today. I am looking forward to a better week. |

Hiya,
For 2007, I'm between Cheyenne and Lincoln-- somewhat behind ya'll! I started in July of 2006 and am on the last leg to Washington. My goal is to get there within 2 weeks. It's been a good motivator for me. |

After plugging in the miles from the past week's Ironman training camp I'm now halfway between between Columbus and Indianapolis.
On the Canada map, if I track from when I started with FJ, I've reached the only place listed on the map where I've actually lived - Prince George. Kind of cool! |

really cool Alison - Hope the camp was great. Figured you weren't just idle... I am just a bit past Prince George, almost to Canada's west coast. However, I have you on the start date by 4-6 months.
And Gerry - Yeah, I knew you were way out ahead. Too bad there is no return route for you. You will have to flip to the other map. :o)

You all rock with your mileage...I am a little outside of Reno!
Ha ha... I need to log race miles, walking miles, breathing miles if I have any hope of keeping up with this pack.

The 163km ride (the entire IMC course except the Cawson out & back) we did on Friday helped bump up the mileage for me. It was a very cool week, really brought it home that the race is going to be fun and that it's totally doable. Plus I had a hoot with the people from my club.
I'll have to ask Chris to add hail to the weather options when you log your training (some epic rides and epic weather!). |

Will finish the country next week. Yippy!!! Only 102 miles away and I have an 8-10 mile run Saturday and a 70 mile ride Sunday. 20 mile training ride Tuesday and 25 mile Roadie Road Rage Race Thursday. That should do it. Not to mention a Century the next Saturday and an Oly Sunday. Woo Hoo!!! The fun just keeps rolling along!!!
I think I will go visit Al-i-son now since I am heading that way on the Canada map. |

Darn it, I don't think I'm going to do 101.1 km by the end of the weekend! If only I hadn't missed last night's ride I'd have had a shot. Although my priority is supposed to be tapering for IMC not beating JC1 to the Atlantic. Isn't it? |

Keep your focus - no matter how much you have to pull in the reins. I have been trying to maintain my bike base and build my swim and run. So the miles are coming about slower now.

I still have 1400 miles to get accross Canada, but that is since my FJ start date, not this calendar year.

Thanks
Since I messed up my neck i'm riding 5 times a week putting in around 200-250 miles per week. My goal next year is to do 2-3 double centuries and to complete an Ironman i just don't know which one yet. I thinking of the full Vineman here in Sonoma Co.
This past week i finally got the ok from the doc. to start swiming & running again. Can't wait to get into the pool again!!!

I just found this challenge and have been watching your miles. I'm now in Des Moines and just 133 miles behind you. I'm coming for you! But for me to catch you, we have to stop riding together ;-) Great ride this weekend, eh? Impressed by the way you pushed through the pain like that, unless you were sandbagging...j/k!

Pat - You're nuts - I mean amazing...
Very nice job getting accross Canada in one year. I may be there over 2 years..., I'll have to change the date soon and check it out.
I am just 44 miles away from the US Map Challenge. Hopefully I will hit is this week if I can get in a short ride during the week. Little hard now that there is 0 time after work during the week.
Our Picnic ride on Saturday will then send me over.

I hear ya on that! I have made some adjustments to my routine by adding early morning weight training and an evening swim....however, at first I started alternating times....
But it seems that I can't get outside to ride....I tried the riding at 5 Pm for a quic 20 miler....it's not bad...but I can't see pot holes, and busted my nuts a few times....went on a group ride on Saturday morning only to find that I bent my rim...
I've been puttimg my miles in on the trainer withe Carmicheal videos...but It seems that I can't get the miles in that I want out doors....note that I am a newbie and being a newbie everything is new...including the transition to winter riding....and not letting go of the warm weather here in the north east!
I have cold weather gear....and I look forward to the club rides on Saturday morning.....

Way to go!!!
Great picnic ride thanks for putting everything together. Now just remember when you start running only increase your long runs by 10% per week.(1 long run per week) build for 4 weeks then reduce your long run for one week then increase again by 10% from your longest run. It's not easy to do because you will want to increase it by 20-40% after 3-4 weeks but don't do it!!! If yo stick with it you will notice a big difference. Remember ICE YOUR KNEES.
OK enough of that have a good week.

Hey Pat,
I should be well on my way to finishing up! I haven't set my goals yet for next year, although I do have a few ideas as to what I want to do. Right now I am getting used to working on weight training, alternate cardio, swimming and strapping into the cycleops trainer. I have been researching triathlons. I have engaged swimming and have a lng way to go, but I've done so much on the bike swimming should be easier, since my stamina is good.
I would have to say that my next goal is running, and ultimately a triathlon working my up to a Sprint distance....for now it's technique, technique while building strength and endurance!
What are your goals? |
|
|

Thanks for the running help Pat! I really need to make more time for it. Looks like I will be stuck running in the dark as it is dark when I get up and dark when I get home.
Perhaps it is time to invest in a treadmill!
Ron - Don't fool yourself with the stamina from cycling. I found the that there was very little carry over from cycling stamina to swimming stamina as so much is technique.
I don't want you to have false expecations and get dicouraged. Stick with it (swimming that is) and it will eventually come around. I am still struggling, but I actually enjoy it now.

Happy Holiday to all!
Hey Gerry...I had a good laugh from your other post on the Frame Advice string, you wrote..."I am 52 yrs old; 5'11'; 244lbs; and that SOB gets down the road like no other bike ..." Your statement made me bust out because I can relate and it gave me inspiration to continue on...then I found you guys on this thread.
Jim
Yes...swim technique takes practice, but I am not in any rush. Jim you're right about endurance thing....What I do is jump rope for warm up before my weight training in the AM which reall works my stamina and wind...Next month I'll start on the tread mill and test my endurance....as I stated before...my goal is to participate in a triathlon next summer.
Quick background
I am 40 years old, 6' tall and weigh approx 198 to 202 pounds. I started cycling April 5, 2007 and put in about 2200 miles since.
Since I started cycling I've lost about 27 pounds, BP is 112/72, and lowered my choloesterol by 100 points.
My goal for this year was lose weight and be physically fit by the time I turned 40, I can honetly say I acheived my goal on October 7, 2007, the day had my 40th birthday!
I live in the Northeast, CT to be exact, work as software salesman/account manager for a software company in healhcare IT.
When I started riding I couldn't keep up with the other guys in my group, by th end of the summer I earned props from the B riders...it was tough, been dropped, rode home alone but I hang in there and eazrned some respect along the way...
Because of the group ride, that I still participate in on Saturday mornings regardless of the temperature, I started training in other disciplines in hopes of maintaining what I gained over the summer....Now I get full use out of my memebership at the YMCA. Everything I do, strength training, swimming, spinning, etc...is so I can be stronger and hopefully faster for group rides next season...I can't explain what I felt the first time I came in with the guys I left the shop with....but I'm addicted! It just so happens that potentialy doing a triathlon is an after thought, or "Might as well!" given all the training I've engaged in. For me It's all about the ride....mastering hills with power and grace while managing my resources for maximum output without going anerobic unless I have to...
get the picture???
Happy Turkey day! I am looking forward to this long weekend...cause I plan on getting some miles in.
Please tell me about yourselves.

Hey Ron -
Sounds like we are living a similar life.
I used to be mainly a weight lifter and had no stamina what-so-ever. My friend got me involved in endurance sports about 5-6 years ago. Started out with Mountain Biking, then Road 4 years ago,and now triathlons last year.
I too turned 40 this year and I work as a Personal Financial Advisor. My goal was to do a 1/2 Iron Man this year, which I did in September.
I also have a group I ride with almost every Saturday morning, and we also do some event rides together. Pat and Chris are in my group, you can see others on the FJ home page. Brian was on there before, and David now. Early on I was almost always the dropee, I still get dropped by many riders especially on long climbs.
But flats and rollers I can usually hang on.
This was a good idea, you might think about creating a new post for people to tell a bit about who they are.
