We are on our way to Yellowstone National Park, reporting from the road. The wireless is screaming fast out here (who knows why). The hope is to get some cycling in on the eastern side of the park.

We made it to Yellowstone late in the afternoon. We had some time to explore some of the local geysers. If you get a chance to go to see old faithful, steer clear of the crowds by taking a quick half mile walk to the geyser field located behind the primary attraction. We arrived to see the beehive geyser explode at close range (less than 30 feet from the walk). My daughter abbey and I ended up getting absolutely soaked in water in the process. Hundreds of gallons of water blew into the sky and then prompty returned to earth to land right on top of us. The initial burst of water was actually quite cold.

Here you can see a picture of the walkway where we were standing. This was a much more up close and personal experience, where the old faithful geyser, which we also saw erupt was kept at a great distance due to the large crowds that form once every 90 minutes.

Some friends and my family took a road trip in August..first we went cross country and spent some time in Chicago, then we went to Yellowstone, Glacier, Mount Hood, coast of Oregon, Vancouver (Victoria and Whistler). Started on the East Coast.
It looks like you may have been there in July?
While in Yellowstone, we were very fortunate to stay in the Old Faithful Inn which was a great location to see the geysers, etc. I enjoyed the other geysers more than Old Faithful which you could not really get very close to.
Your trip looked fabulous.

We had the same experience with Old Faithful that you did. While it was the main attraction, it was the short 1/2 mile walk to some of the additional geysers that was the most enjoyable part of our trip. While we didn't stay at the Inn, we did use the showers that were located just behind it. I got to spend a bit of time enjoying old faithful after sunset when all the crowds vanished. It is a remarkable place to see! |
