I'm looking at this as a discussion point and there are zero posts here. Does anyone out there really have a warm up or a cool down routine? I may walk a bit after running or start running slowly but I don't move a while, stretch and then get into it. I take a boot camp class on Tu & Th...we do the warm up cool down thing there but unless it's organized, does anyone out there really work it in? Please advise. Beverly

Absolutely, but there is a bunch of stuff that suggests the best warm-up cool-down is just an easier version of what you are doing, so when I run, I walk a bit and then jog slowly before "beginning" my workout, when cycling, I pedal with less resistance at a slower cadence, when swimming I may do some laps alternately breast, back and freestyle before getting into my freestyle workout. Stretching before working out hasn't really been shown to have benefits, best to stretch after workout with warm muscles or as separate time with a 5-10 warm up and then 20-30 minutes stretching.

Hey, I warmed up and cooled down today. Thanks for the inspiration. I found my workout to be better because of a few extra minutes spent taking care of myself. Thanks. Beverly

I've been doing a 5 minute walk before I start running and my suggestion is to really time that 5 minutes because it seems like FOREVER. I always look down at my watch to see how long it's been and how much longer until I can "get to my real workout". But it does help tremendously, so I'm sticking with it.

My activity is running/speed walking so I stretch my calves really well before starting as well as my hamstrings. I usually walk for a couple of minutes then develop a slow jog. At that point I choose to run or walk at my workout pace for that day. I also go by my HR resting for that day to see if I overworked the day before. I can tell if I did if my HR resting is 10 beats faster than normal. I also stretch after my workout out with the calves and hamstrings.

Short form? YES!!!!! It makes a huge difference. Warmups: When I was swimming, I'd do some slow easy laps to get my body ready for a real workout. When I did weight training I'd do a little cardio (bike or step) for five or ten minutes, some ab work, some stretching after that, and THEN go for the pump. Running, I'd walk fast for a few blocks (or five minutes or so) until I couldn't stand it any more and then I'd start running. Cool down, same...swimming: long slow laps in the pool using whatever strokes I'd been working out with, plus some in-pool stretching and strengthening stuff I learned in a syncro class plus and/or syncro; weight training: more floor work and stretching, running: walk the last few blocks or five minutes or so, and then stretching. Right now I'm doing videos at home and they all have warmups, stretching, and cooldowns associated. In my opinion, the final stretching on those is never enough, so I do a 30 minute stretch tape every day when I'm done with whatever I do. The body LOVES that.
