For those of you that exercise in the morning........when you first started, how did you start the routine of getting up early to workout. I do okay for one or two days a week and then I can't keep it up. I know the hardest part is putting one foot on the floor, but some mornings it feels overwhelming (even if I went to bed early)! Any suggestions for this morning exercise beginner???

For me, the mental incentive is in thinking, "If I don't get it done right now, I won't get it done." My schedule is such that the longer the day goes, the busier it gets. I'll also have the peace of mind knowing that the exercise is completed for the day.

After you do it for a few days straight, you should develop a habit and it will become a little easier.

You also might want to try either eating or not eating before the workout. Sometimes my body responds much better when it first gets out of bed to food than to exercise. Once I feed it, it is much more cooperative.

Keep us posted on how you are doing!

Hi Heidi! It does take time to develop a morning routine. I have been getting up early for three years now to go on a 2.6 mile walk with my dog. I try to get up at the same time everyday to keep my sleep pattern consistent. And I also try to go to bed at the same time. My body functions best on 7 hours of sleep so that is what I aim for every night. Of course, it doesn't always work out. But that's life. When I get up at 2:30am, I have my morning coffee, turn on the TV. and watch a cooking show, get on the computer and check my emails and then do my morning stretching. After that it is out the door for the walk. When I return, it's time to get ready for work and get my son ready for school. It makes me feel great to know that I have gotten a good start on my fitness goals for the day. And my dog is happy too. I know that 2:30am is not a good time for most people but for me it works. Every one must find what works for them and make it part of their daily routine. Good luck Heidi! I know you can do it! Robin

I have to ditto the comments about if I don't do it now I won't later. I am a morning person by far. But, one article I read stated the importance of finding the time that fits YOU the best. Maybe you aren't a morning person and should try to commit to another time. I know when you work it is hard. Experiment, don't paint yourself into a box. Be flexible, the most important thing is that you exercise some time during the day. Best wishes!!

Thanks for all the comments. I'm definitely a morning person because I've tried working out at all times of the day and the morning is when I am at my best. I'll keep trying and hope that I'll get used to it soon! Thanks again for your encouragement.

Heidi,

As for me I am NOT a morning person but I have found with a goal I tend to stick to a routine better than if I don't have anything to shoot for. I also work best on 7 hours of sleep and to do this means I usually have to get in bed by 9:30pm. Waking up is a chore but if I get out of bed and putz around for a few minutes the body starts to respond. Out the door and I am ready to go. Mental trick is to remind myself that I would rather get this over now so during the day I do not have to beat myself up about STILL having to exercise. After awhile, pushing yourself through the tough early stages, it becomes easier to wake up and get excited about the physical activity. Once you are out on the road you realize how good it feels and happy you did not put it off.

Heidi - I don't know what your schedule is like generally, but I usually only work out 3-5 mornings per week. The other mornings, I still get up early, but do something just fun (read a novel, go for a walk, shop online). That way, I build the pattern of getting up, but if I *really* don't feel like I can work out, I don't have to. I fill in with one or two noon and a few afternoon/evening workouts.

I don't want to discourage you, but just wondering - why do you have to do it in the morning? From my experience if I don't like doing something I won't keep up with it. Maybe trying exercising at a time that isn't so difficult.

if i have to workout in the morning, turn the shower on really cold and put ur head under it for a few seconds :) that normally works lol but i always try to workout when i am most awake during the day so i can puch myself even harder and be fully aware of my body when it is being pushed instead of thinking about sleep or not even fully knowing if im awake yet.
