Donna,

I was doing really great at walking then had a loss in the family and have had a hard time getting started. But would love to have a partner to motivate me & that I could motivate. I, like you really don't care for exercise but know that I really need to for my health. Ane walking is the easiset & least boring.

So put on your walking shoes & lets get moving.

Leesa

I know how you feel, I used to hate running. I mean when I was 12 years old my Mom tried to get me to run. Through high school I had this friend that could run forever, always tring to get me to run, I just hated it though. One day shortly after my 30th birthday I asked my friend from highschool about how to run and I really listened to what he had to say. Then I started running and I ran (slowly) everyday even though I hated it. After 2 months I could not wait for my daily run. Now I love to run, but I still run pretty slowly.

So stick with something and soon you will love it. Try as many sports or activitys as you can. Pick ones that work for your body and soon your body will love it.

Rosa-

I often do 10K walks in Maryland. I could let you know the next time so if you want to do a 10K with a group, you could join me. I know I will be doing one in Columbia on either New Years Eve or New Years Day, or both if I can.

Rosa-

A 10k is only 6.2 miles; plus the Volksmarches in Columbia are on flat, paved, walking trails - MUCH easier than a 7 mile hike. Some Volksmarches are actually hikes, but most are on sidewalks and bike trails. I think 10000 steps a day is 5 or 6 miles anyway, isn't it? I think that would more than prepare you. As for slowing me down, few people walk slower than I do. Usually when I walk with other people I end up walking much faster than is comfortable for me. So no worries!! The beauty of a volksmarch is that it is a non-competitive event that you can finish at your own pace. They hand you a map and written directions and you just go off on your own and finish in your own time. I will definitely let you know the next time I do one in MD.

Some pedometers, like mine - a sportline - don't count the first 5 steps until after you take step 6, so steps between refridge and sink and stove rarely count, they also require a certain amount of motion, and frequently around the house you don't get as much hip swing because of shorter steps and slower pace. Also pedometers don't do well going up and down stairs, so I take the handicap ramps, longer strides at all times, and firm steps when walking around the house or classroom. There is not much you can do about the kitchen trianle except to try and keep in constant motion, then it will record, but if you walk and stop and walk and stop, it won't get any of it!

I also wear my right on my hip, near where my belt loop usually is, but to the front, not the back.

I also test mine when ever there is any doubt as I wear them out about every 2-4 months. walk 100 steps and see what it records, if it is not really close to 100 test it again, if it is still off by a good amount, get a new one. I find that when it goes bad it cuts my steps by half or more. a real drag at the end of a long day to check my steps and find there are only 8000 instead of 18,000!

Hope that helps.

Hi Tanya The name of the pedometer is Life WIse digital Pedometer and it tracks every step I take from the time I get up until the time I go to bed. It has a lot of features and they all work well, I have no complaints. I purchased it at radio shack for $20.00. their webb site is www.Lifewiseonline.com. tj

Hi, I'm back to Fitness Journal after a month of slacking... sigh... But I got a treadmill a couple of weeks ago, and I'm ready to get back on the wagon. I've gone two days in a row on my treadmill for a total of 5.3 miles. I'm shooting for walking no less than 30 minutes every day and as much as an hour at a time.

Yesterday, I put in an action movie with a kick a$$ chick... That's motivation for ya! I'm really liking to watch tv shows while I walk. It's the only thing that keeps my mind off of how long I've actually been at it. I'm getting seasons of shows from the library or Blockbuster! The hour-long series are better, because you have that goal of sticking it out until the end. The shorter shows are good for when you only have a 20-25 minute time slot in the mornings.

Looking forward to sharing and reading everyone's progress!

Tanya :)

Good for you Tanya, I look at the fit TV channel along with music and that keeps my mind off of what I am doing. Today I am starting a 12 week challange for myself 12/25/05-3/26/06. I am doing the WW on line program so I plan to stick with exercise(the treadmill, weights and my ab lounge routine) plus the ww on line and I know I will do well. So lets walk on. Keep up the good work. tj
