I got a flat half way through the bike ride on my first tri. A big nail punctured it. I didn't have anything to fix it, including the ability to change a tire. How's that for bad luck. I got returned to the transition area in the course support van. Cried for an hour and then did the run for the heck of it. Now I gotta wait 2 more months for the next. Uggg, I really want to finnish one of these! |

I'm sorry Jami, that is my worst fear..but have not had one in a race yet. I guess the best thing you can do is practice changing flats, and make sure you always have a spare and some tools on your bike so that you can finish the race unassisted.
You've got 2 months to practice for next time!! |

Before my first group ride, I flattened both my tires and practiced changing them as I was afraid I'd be the one with the flat without knowing how to change it!! But most bike stores will have tire changing clinics--at the very least I'm sure the mechanic would show you how to do it!! In any triathlon carry the supplies with you, even if you don't know how to use them...while the other competetors aren't supposed help you change the tire, usually the sag can help you but unless it's a big race they won't have to supplies to do it...just the know how--any you might be waiting forever for them! Sorry about your bad luck though, good for you getting the run in and best of luck in your next race. :) |

ohhh.. My worst nightmare (other than drowning). I have not had a flat during a race, however I have messed up my deraileur trying to adjust it. Point being, get to know your bike. I would recommend a bike clinic too.
Better luck next race.

Jami, I feel your pain... I just did a tri on Saturday and got a flat about 3 miles before the end of the bike ride. I took all extra weight off of my bike before the race... including my extra tube! (Note to self - DON"T DO THAT!) I was able to walk my bike in and then do the run. Although I had no motivation to run after my blow-out on the bike ride. The worst part is that I was on record pace, and I think I would have placed in the top 4 in my division! Oh, well, I am glad that it was not my first tri, I have been doing them for about six years. I will have an easy time improving on my time for next year! (That is always my goal)
Good luck on your next tri... learn how to change a tire too, it's really not that hard. |

Must be the season for flat tires. Funny thing, I have never raced with a spare tube! Maybe that is the secret to not getting a flat?! Oh, I did manage to run off the road today and into the bushes, talk about embarrasing. Luckily, noone was around to see it. Biking is all about experiences...right?

I'm sure that if you do these tri's enough you'll end up with some sort of delima eventually. Let's hope I got over that, really before I even got started. I will definatly carry a spare with me from now on, and learn how to change it!! |

I am a very superstitous person. That's about enough talk about flats. I don't even want to hear the word anymore.
Perhaps we can just call it somthing else. In golf I was always told to never call the sand on the course a "sand trap", the word "trap" had too many negative conatations. Instead call it a "bunker".
Hmmmmmm
Perhaps we can just say my tire suddenly had more contact with the road.
Or, I lost pressure. Losing presure in most aspects of life is positive.
any other positive spins are much appreciated!!
;o)
Better luck on your next one Jami.

Yes - I like it, perhaps with a Psssst, Psssst, Pssst instead of a woof, woof, woof at the end. ~ JC1.5 |
