Mike, Sounds like you are over hydrating, although that might not be the reason for the weight gain. You are also building muscle. Look on active.com they are a great resource for nutrition, hydration and overall training health. Check them out, and do cut back on your water consumption.

The problem is NOT the water. However, with 256 oz of water how do you have time to eat between the times you are going to the bathroom? =) If anything it should help your metabolism but cut it back to 64 oz a day. You can over hydrate and it can be deadly. Reduction in salt levels blah blah blah. However, no time to go into this now but I will write more later. Check out some of the posts on the other subjects about "weight loss" and that may give you some info.
Like I said in one of those posts, if you shed 1 lb of fat and gain 1 lb of muscle you will still WEIGH the same amount. Have your body measurements changed?

Michael,
Over hydration is called hyponatremia and it usually effects triathletes, marathoners, and other endurance type of athletes. What you might want to do is weigh yourself before your workout (completely nekked), do an hours worth of activity and then weigh your self after (completely nekked again). This will tell you what your sweat rate is and you will know how much you need to replenish every hour of exercise. Of course, after you know your sweat rate, don't wait till after the workout to replenish but take in "x" amount every 20 minutes to reach your target. Then of course have a few more glasses during the day to reach your 64 oz. Stay balanced.
Do you have a heart rate monitor? During your cardio workouts what is your level of exertion? Are you panting for breath or could you carry on a conversation the ENTIRE time that you are running. Just wondering because if you want to burn the most fat possible, then you need to be in zone 3 to allow your body to utilize it's fat stores for (majority) energy instead of say muscle tissue or just burning off that chocolate chip cookie you had before the gym.
If you just started a couple weeks ago, your body might still be reacting to the change by holding onto the fat for survival purposes. That is why you hear "diets" don't work. People quit eating or reduce intake to two meals a day and the body shuts down to retain the fat. It is better to "keep the fire stoked" and eat something like 6 times a day. Keep the metabolism furnace burning but make sure it is good foods that you are feeding the machine. |

I have been told many times that you should drink half your body weight plus eight ounces of water daily as a baseline and then of course replace what you lose when working out. Also, you add two cups of water daily for every cup of carbonated or caffeinated beverage you drink. |
