It's not too early to start planning 2009's races. I am putting a pole out to find out what everyone is planning on. If we have a few people that are doing the same races, perhaps more will want to make the journey for a destination Tri Race.
So for me I am considering the following local events and travel events:
Vineman 2009 - Sonoma County, California
Big Kahuna 2009 - Right on the Santa Cruz Beech Boardwalk in Santa Cruz, CA (Highly recommend this one)
The Hula Man 2009 - Oregon
One of the following Full IM -
Wisconsin - Florida - or Arizona (Any personal feedback on these would be helpful.)
Thanks,

Are you planning a trip to Wisconsin in Septemeber? My understanding of Wisconsin IM, is that you are allowed to register for next years event the day of this years event, and that it fills within 2 hours. I am not sure how Florida and Arizona work. Good Luck! A friend of mine will be waiting in line this year for next years race. She's is trying to qualify for Maui. |

FYI - Florida and Arizona both work out the same way. They sell out immediately either the day of or the day after. This is what I am told. I have never done a full. ~ JC1.5 |

Me and the hubby are voluntering for IMFL 08 so we can sign up for IMFL 09. I wanted to do IMAZ but with there being 2 races this year the chances that we would make it by volunterring in Nov were slim. Soooo, we are off to FL in Nov to get our "iron on". We are still playing with the other races to get everything "right" Good Luck! Vickie |

Vickie -
Does this mean that there is no chance of getting into IMFL 09 or IMAZ 09 unless I volunteer in 08?
Guess I better start figuring this out!!
Thanks,

I'm not the expert on IM, but I've been told that it's the best way to get in for the next year. Besides, I want to volunteer this year so I can start to wrap my brain around what I am about to under take. Suck in some of the magic and help others have the race of their (life, career, month whatever!) Start planning soon! Vickie PS i'm sure someone out there has better info than I, hello?!! We have Ironman/women in our forum. Come on guys..... |

Well...I have a lot of thinking to do over the next few weeks before I will have an official schedule, but what I am thinking about is going to Pentiction for IMC on August 24th (to watch and volunteer) and then sign up for IMC '09 the day after the race.
If I do decide to do that, then next year's schedule will look like this;
-Oliver Half Ironman June 7th
-Will have to skip my local olympic distance which is the following weekend because I found it prety tough this year with 2 weeks rest inbetween
-Osoyoos Desert Half Ironman July 5th
-Maybe a Late July/early August OLY if I can find one
-Subaru Ironman Canada, August 30th 2009
I also am planning a half marathon in the spring, but don't know the dates yet...and I'll also do a few local fun races and runs leading up to the tri season, but those are the big ones! |

I loved IMFL last year and thought the course was great for me given that VA Beach is FLAT and so was IMFL...but I'm sure given the current popularity of IM events, going to the race the year before may very well be the only way to get in. That said, I will do another ultradistance triathlon soon...maybe even next year, but I'm going to look for a smaller 140.6 to do run by a reputable company, because while I may dream about qualifying for Kona one day...that day will probably be when I'm 107 and dead...so, I plan to enjoy the training once again and be less stressed out about signing up a year in advance and still get that awesome feeling of accomplishment as I cross a finish line 140.6 miles later, the same day that I start and hopefully a little faster than last time!! :) ...a little secret though...IM Canada is on my list of things I want to do before I die...along with the NYC marathon and Boston of course!! |

hmmmmm IMC...
I think Alison did that one last year, but haven't heard anything else from here. Anyone else already do this one. I may have to research it a bit, I do like Canada.

Jim,
Good to get this post started sooner than later. I have already locked in approval from the boss for IM WI '09. I have registered as a volunteer and will sign up for next year's event.
From there, I am unsure what other races I'll do. I'll likely work with my coach to line up some events. I'd live to do at least 2 travel events this year.
Keep the ideas coming.

Oh yes, for those who want a harder IM...I hear IM WI is difficult due to the ever changing weather and consistent rollers on the bike. But hey, I understand not everyone is build like a mid-westerner. If you want to take it easy, I suggest IMFL.

Greg, I know WI has hills, but really, relatively flat or hilly, no IM is easy! I think everyone's best bet is to look at what type of terrain & climate they have near them to train on, and then consider that they will be training 20+ hours for several months leading up to the race...then take a look at what types of challenges you have...work, family responsibilities etc, study the course maps etc and figure out which race works best for them. For example if I want to ride something remotely hilly other than an overpass or bridge, I have to travel at least 45 minutes each way, which means in addition to that 20+ hours of training I'm adding several hours more a week just in travel alone...something to consider...IM is an awesome experience, but it takes a tremendous amount of time to train properly... |

In response to Nicole and my cavalier "smack" talk about IM's, I agree that doing 140 miles anywhere is a true test of physical endurance regardless of the landscape. I am chosing IMWI due to geographical proximity. My feeble attempt to goad folks in undertaking the challenge may have come across as something other than just that, so please don't take offense.
Good luck for those who have yet to finish their long distances this season and in planning for next year. Where did the time go?

...just using your smack talk to make a point that recommendations are great, but being an informed and realistic consumer is probably your best bet when signing up for such an undertaking...but that's just my work smarter not harder philosophy, we only have 168 hours in a week...work a 40 hour week with 20 minute commute each way...you're down to 125...add in 20+ hours of training...you're down to 105...add in at least 8 hours of sleep (and you'll need your sleep) down to 49...which leaves you roughly 7 hours a day to eat, shower, travel to your workouts, attend your child's activities, catch a movie with the wife, do your take home work, check your email and of course put your workouts and race reports into your Fitness Journal! |

OK I'm scared. IM09 is starting to fade from visability.
I am not big on taking a long trip to volunteer, but everything I am reading seems to indicate that it is the only way to get in. Thus, it appears IMAZ is the closest I have that would be similar to my climate. IMWI is probably most like my training terrain, but I know that there can be humidity in that area, and definitely in FL.
I can't imagine that I would do well in humidity.
Still pondering... On another note, I saw the FJ crew leave Chris' house yesterday. 6 of them driving to Colorado for the Courage Classic to benefit Children's hospital. It just KILLED me to not be going with them. I am expecting some real cool pics and stories to be coming down the pipe.
