I'm signed up for the Vineman 70.3on July 30th and am psyched. I'm doing my first triathlon this weekend, an Olympic distance. Do you think it makes most sense to have my husband drop me off at the start and then meet me at the finish so I don't have to try to park at Johnson's beach? Does the race have any shuttles from finish to start? Any thoughts about where we might want to stay (upscale inn or B&B). Thanks. I did my first marathon in Napa, so thought it would be cool to do my first 70.3 in wine country too!

This is pretty common practice. There is a shuttle, but its a bit of a pain and should be avoided if you have another ride (everyone wants to take the shuttle back at the same time ;-) Your plan is a good one!

There are a lot of cool places to stay. Let me poke around and see if I can find something close by. Cheers!

I've signed up for the 2006 Vineman Ironman 70.3. My first half iron and my first 1/2 marathon. I can't wait. I'm going down from Portland with 4 other club members. Were all taking one van. Most of them have done it before. I'm the newbee.

I just finished an Olympic today and the swim seemed very short! Not 1500m at all. Everyone had faster swim times than normal. Does anyone know if the Vineman 70.3 swim distance is accurate?

I am signed up for the half aqua bike. I just got back from a camp where we trained on the Vineman course for three days. All I can say is that I need to ride more hills, more hills, and more hills. They have not yet dammed the river so we were able to swim in place against the very strong current. That was fun!

Vineman is 10 days away. Is everybody ready? I am, but not ready for the run. Since this is my first 1/2 iron...I'm somewhat excited. I will be down on Friday. There are 7 of us from our tri-club doing it. We are the Headhunters. Look for us. You can't miss us. We're all decked out in a jungle theme. From the van to the jerseys. If you see ask for Kevin and come say hi. It would be fun to meet some fellow FJ users.

Dear Vineman Ironman 70.3 Athlete,

Thank you for choosing the 2006 Vineman Ironman 70.3 Triathlon! This update can also be viewed in the Latest Info section of our website

(Note: please do not respond to this email. If you need to contact our office, please email raceinfo@vineman.com

USA TRIATHLON RULE AMENDMENTS for VINEMAN IRONMAN 70.3 – please be sure to familiarize yourself with these rules amendments. They may be viewed on the back page of your race program or on our site here: http://www.vineman.com/index_main.php3?l=h – click on race program

Remember personal communication and listening devises are NOT ALLOWED. This includes ipods, mp3 players, and so on.

Important, be sure your helmet is CPSC certified. Non CPSC helmets are not allowed.

If you have any questions regarding our race rules or the rule amendments we suggest you attend one of the athlete race meetings at ether 2pm or 5pm.

VOLUNTEERS – W can always use the help from your family and friends to help race day go smoother. If know anyone that would like to volunteer please email volinfo@vineman.com We can still use support for body marking, bike to run transition, bike course marshals and finish line areas.

IMPORTANT or NEW ITEMS FOR 2006:

BIB NUMBERS on BIKE and RUN … for 2006 it is required to wear your Bib number during both the bike and run portions of the vent. The best options are: 1- Wear a race belt with the number facing rearward on the bike – then turn the bib around to the front for the run. OR 2 - Wear the bib on the front the entire event. This is mandatory as bib numbers will be marked and used to indicate penalties or an accumulation of penalties

IMPORTANT RUN COURSE INFO and DETAILS – similar to the 2005 event we will be asking runners to stay on only one side of the road for the majority of the course.

In the distance between AID STATION 1 on run course (mile 1.1) and the entrance to the LA CREMA winery (mile 6), athletes will be required to stay in the LEFT lane of the road on the outbound section of the course until reaching La Crema. Once leaving La Crema (mile 7.1) you will be running on that same lane, now your RIGHT lane of the road. Essentially you’ll always be running on the side of the road as the aid stations are located. This rule will be monitored by USAT officials and subject to time penalties.

RUN GEAR DROP OFF: We strongly advise you to drop off and place your run gear at the bike to run transition area on Saturday July 29th between 2 and 8pm. By doing this on Saturday you will save significant time and hassle as opposed to doing it race morning. You will need to be wearing your athlete wristband to enter the transition area. We will be trying to open T2 at 1pm if the transition area build is on schedule.

NO PAINT or SIGNS ON THE ROADS: The county of Sonoma and The Vineman Triathlon strongly encourage you to not mark the roads with any paint. PLEASE! If you choose to write a message on the road please do so with sidewalk chalk. The County of Sonoma has also asked us encourage fans and family members not to post signs on tree’s, polls or private property anywhere along the course. By obeying these two requests we ensure the longevity of this event in Sonoma County. Thank You!

DO NOT FORGET

JULY 28th ATHLETE WELCOME: We will be offering a $25,000 prize purse in 2006 and are expecting some of the worlds top pros to be competing. Along with this we will have an Athlete Welcome Gathering on Friday evening July 28th. This social gathering will include:

A Sonoma County Welcome and Special Edition Vineman Slideshow

A Talk Show and question and answer session with top pros and special guest, Triathlon Legend Dave Scott.

DURING THE EVENING WE WILL BE GIVING AWAY:

A Blue Seventy Helix Wetsuits

A year’s supply of all-natural and organic performance products and snacks from CLIF BAR! Winner will receive a bar like CLIF, BUILDERS, NECTAR, MOJO or LUNA and a SHOT product sucha as DRINK, ENERGY GEL or BLOKS per day for 365 days

A JAVELIN Bicycle Frameset

Hydration Packages from NUUN

Also, items from Aquasphere, Fuel Belt, and our great swim sponsor TYR!

This event will take place in the theatre at Windsor High School and start promptly at 7pm. Seating is limited and will be on a first come first serve basis.

MASSAGE: We are currently pre-booking massage at the expo on July 29th. Please see the contact information and details in the Latest Info section of our website at www.vineman.com – see MASSAGE BOOKING

Kind Regards,

The Vineman Staff

Good Luck this weekend everyone, I will be out cheering you on. I plan to join you in the future, but I am very intimidated by the swimming. Bad experiences as a youth.

Got back from Vineman at 11:00pm Monday night. A long drive with sore muscles and a bit of rode rash from loosing control on the sharp corner they warned us about. The good thing is, I didn't take anyone out with me.

6 of us from our tri club drove down Friday in a van pulling a trailer of bikes. Van problems caused us to leave 5 hours late. We made it to Windsor High school around 3:00pm on Saturday. Got our numbers. Went to the 5:00pm meeting. Set up T2 and after eating dinner made it to our hotel by 9:00pm. Got to bed around 10:00.

The T1 setup was somewhat hectic. Too many people in a small area trying to do setup their transition. After waiting in the porta-potty line for what seemed like 30 minutes I went back to my bike and found some else had taken my swim cap. After frantically checking and only 10 minutes until my wave started I found out extra swim caps were available at the wave corral. 10 minutes is a long time but not there. The only isle way into and out of the transition area was packed with people entering and leaving and in that line I was a good 5 minutes from the exit. I made it to the water just as my wave was entering the water.

The swim was good. 40 minutes. Lots of people in the water and the middle of the river was only about 3 feet deep. Some people walked a short distance but I wanted to swim.

The bike was great. 3 hours flat. The course was extended to 57.5 miles due to construction but it was a very good course. Nice rolling hills and not too difficult. The road itself was terrible. Pot holes, patches and gaps everywhere. One bridge joint was so big that water bottles crowded the area making it look like an aid station.

The run was ok. 2:46 and a few seconds. Only ok for me since running is not my thing. It was my first 1/2 marathon so I'm proud of that. The course was good with small rolling hills and not much traffic. It was starting to get hot and La Crema, the turn around, took forever to turn around. It wasn't a turnaround at a cone it was a 1/4 to 1/2 mile turnaround.

My overall time was 6:38:48 well within my goal hour of between 6 and 7 hours.

The experience was great and I'd like to do it again. Maybe September will be my next Half and now I have a time to break.

Tammie,

Thanks Tammie. Your right! September is right around the corner. I never looked at it that way. Summer is fading fast. Looks like Black Diamond in Enumclaw Washington will be my next Half. It's a 2 to 3 hour drive from Portland.
