Well, I am doing it. Training for my first half. June 28th. Adding a mile every Sunday and tapering for 2 weeks. Hope to break 2 hours. I usually race a 5k in the 7:40 to 7:50 range. But not going to push it for my first 13.1

Wish me luck!

Way to go...you'll love it. I've only run 2 half marathons and it's such a thrill. Hal Higdon has a really good training program that I've used for the half. Take a look at it too...might give you some ideas for training. It helped me a lot. Just Google Hal Higdon training and you should find it. I ran the last half that I did in 1hr 48 minutes using his program.

Good Luck and enjoy!

Yes, I agree, your times are speedy. My first 1/2 marathon is in about 5 weeks. It's at the end of my 1 mile swim and 56 mile bike ride...oye ve.

Make sure you post your race results!

Greg

Thanks guys, and gals. I am getting ready. Ran 4.5 last night and will run another 3 tonight. I am increasing my tuesday night runs by .5 miles a week and keeping my wednesday runs to 3 miles.

good luck to you all on your halfs...and the swim and bike. I will do a 70.2 some day as well. And Maybe even a full Iron-Man...but that scares me right now.

My first 1/2 Marathon was today... I'm pretty tired so I will just tell you that it was great! I finished in 2:34:39... that's 10 1/2 minutes faster than my goal.

I will post a full race report tomorrow...

KEEP MOVING!!!

Thanks... here is the report on my first 1/2 marathon...

It was everything that I had hoped for and more! I had tears in my eyes as I crossed the start line, and for the first mile! Each mile along the route was clearly marked and I couldn't believe how fast they were going! The people along the route were so great, there was music and cheering, some even gave high fives! About mile 10 there was a huge group that was cheering and about 20 high fives were given out! One lady even looked at me and said "How awesome are you?!!??" That gave me such a boost and helped me get through the last 3 miles. The last mile was a run through the players tunnel onto Lambeau field and a lap around the field! I am such a Packer fan that I have green and gold running through my veins, so of course I was crying with excitement as I ran around the field! It was an experience like none other! I don't know what happened the last 10th of a mile, but I sprinted to the finnish faster than I have ever sprinted in my life! They announced my name as I crossed the finnish line and I was in 7th heaven! My time was 2:34:39 that is 10 1/2 minutes faster than I thought I would run! I am so excited that I did it, I will absolutely do it again!

Now this week I have to start training for my sprint triathlon in July... I went for a 11 1/2 mile bike ride this morning. Legs felt good!

I have tears just reading Tammie's post. I to am running my first half on July 18th in Bryce Canyon, Utah. I'm doing it with the support of family, but all alone for the run. I'm nervous. I'm at 7 miles and my knees are really starting to hurt when I run. I tried running with knee braces yesterday, but I've heard its not good to use a brace because you become dependent. Any advice?

Amy, A few suggestions for your knees...

1. How are your shoes? I went to a store that does a foot strike analysis, and a lot of the pain I was having stopped after I had the right shoes.

2. I agree with you on becoming dependent on a knee brace, use only if all else fails.

3. Creams work... a couple that I have used are Tiger Balm that I bought at Walgreens or Biofreeze that I got from my Chiropractor. Both work well, but you must must must wash you hands well after application!

Good luck with your training and let me know how your knees are doing!

Well, its been a while since my first 1/2 but I did complete it. Just been too busy to report. I will give a full report but I ran a 1:53:04 and my run buddy ran a 1:58 so we were both really pleased. More to come.

Very nice Alan - Way to crush that 2 hour mark.

Tammie - Great to hear about your awesome 1/2 - Finishing at Lambeau field is really cool. Even if Brett Farve doesn't return.

Amy - Can't wait to hear about the Utah 1/2, hope the knees are well!

Mine (like Greg) is going to come this weekend as part of a 1/2 Ironman. I am just praying that the legs don't cramp and that they can keep moving (albeit slow) through the entire 13.1. Breaking 2 hours would be a small miracle and a shock. I would have to be feeling really good. Most likely I am planning a 2:20:00 at around 10 to 10:30 min miles.

I did average an 8:30 min mile after a long ride last weekend, but that was only for 2 miles. Not sure I can sustain that for 13.1 on rollers.
