Hi there,
I love my running and am planning to run a 1/2 marathon to get my feet wet and to build up to a marathon. My question is do people wear ipods or music devices when doing theses? I don't think I could run without one. I have been running for years but always to music. Does this make me less of a runner because I don't like to run without music.
let me know
regards,

Merrilee,
No you aren't less of a runner but there are some cautions that you need to think about which include safety, being aware of your surroundings and what is going on because you can't hear everything with the music. Also, I use to run with music and had two falls. I think it took one of the sensories and my equalibrium was affected. So, just be careful. When I stopped using the music it took a while to get use to it, but now I enjoy the birds and frogs and other noises that I am able to hear now. When you are running your marathons you will enjoy the people much more when you can listen and talk.
Press on!

I train with music and even wish they would let us use music for the run portion of tiathlons. I'd have to agree about riding with music though, I think it is asking for a possible accident.
I have always felt that there was enough going on around the course that made me forget the lack of music though.
I keep hearing people post statements that question thier existence as "real runners", i.e... if they walk on a marathon, if they use music...etc.. As far as I'm concerned if you hit the streets with the intention of running and it ends up being an "attempt" at running...then you're a runner. Not everyone can be Carl Lewis or Paula Radclif. (sorry for the soapbox just then)

Thanks Nadine, kim and lee,
Your comments were much appreciated. Will give the 1/2 a go, tempo free with security blanket in back pocket, of course. | agree safety is alway a concern however I run in the middle of no where with just me and the many hills. The few cars that do travel my road are use to going slow for the cows, so avoiding me shouldn't be much of a prob.
Congrads! to Lee for completing her first Marathon and without and backup.
regards,

Thanks Dan and the others,
I injured my acillies over the easter break sprinting down a hill. So have only just got back on track. Have decided to just clock up some kilometers and enjoy the music until I build up my fitness again.

Here's my two cents..... I run with my MP3. I am a "real runner" with 2 marathon and 2 half marathons under my belt. Music keeps me going when the times get rough. I have actually never run without my mp3, and I don't care to! Because I am a woman, I am cautious about what time I emerge from the house to run, and I only use one headphone when darkness of the night ensues. I work hard with both legs in motion, headphones blaring and wreckless abandon guiding me. As a result I've completed two marathons and two half marathons! The answer here is to do what you love with out making yourself vulnerable to attack. I absolutely wear my MP3 during events and in the entertaining portions of the events, I remove my earphones. You are not less of a runner, you are a realistic runner with taste. Get in there and do what is best for you! Races generally don't disqualify racers based on their running preferences! Just make sure that if you drop that MP3, you can bear to leave it on the groound, because retrival options may be limited in the race!!!!! |

Hey Ipod/MP3 runners,
Check out www.djsteveboy.com He has some amazing podcast mixes that keep a constant beat for 1-2 hours. For me 130bpm is a walk and 180bpm is roaring along. I like the 165-172bpm range. The music is not what I would normally listen to but it really works for running.
Tell me what you think.
I'm training for Marine Corps Marathon. This weekend (Aug 6) I'm running the Yukon River Trail Half Marathon for training in Whitehorse. See you out there!

Tina,
I've been looking for a CD that has a steady beat for at least an hour. I teach Kardio Kickboxing and most music mixes don't keep a beat through out the songs. I'll check it out.
