Rian,
I did the swim and bike of a 1/2 this past weekend (could not do the run because I broke my toe the day before). Anyway, I wore my tri suit, and I spent the last half of the bike wishing I had some additional padding in the shorts! Good luck!

Toughen up Rian...why do you think they call it IRONMAN or even 1/2 IRONMAN?!!! =)
What you could do is just wear some jammers for the swim and when you hit T1, slide your extra padded riding shorts over top of the jammers. Quick, easy, and it will not hamper your swim but will give you the comfort you desire on the bike.
Go to performance.com and look at the gel shorts that are more expensive. Make sure you order them way ahead of your race so you can be sure they are padded enough for what you are looking for. If not send them back and try a different style. My most comfortable pad is one of those grooved funky looking ones, not your typical chamois cloth "minimalist" that are common in most shorts. It is in my tri suit so that works out well for me. |

I always do my bike rides in padded shorts and just did the half ironman on Sunday in the tri shorts since I wore them under the wetsuit. Big mistake. I missed my padded shorts and will do whatever combo I need to do next time to have the padded shorts. Swimsuit and then add paddeded shorts, etc. |
