I am wondering which is the smarter choice between these two.

Either getting in the mileage (22-26 miles) before a race or getting in more recovery weekends (9-13 miles)? I didn't get as early of a start as I wanted to and I have two more months before the race (my first). This past Saturday I walk / ran 17 miles in 3 hours 22 minutes which is good for me. I've been increasing my mileage for the past month and a half. I just don't know (since I may be running out of time) which path to take. I am just trying to finish the race but I would like to finish around 5 and a half hours. The time limit is 6 and a half.

Any thoughts from you experienced experts would be appreciated.

I've finished a bunch of marathons in the 5 hour time range and tend to believe the recovery weekends are pretty important. Also, how many days per week are you running, because I find 3-4 days a week with cross training a good way to avoid injury, have fresher legs and still train enough. But if you just ran 17, if you look at the last 7-8 weeks of the Higdon program here, you could easily follow that http://www.halhigdon.com/marathon/Mar00novice.htm from where you are now. Good luck. Which marathon are you doing?
